We cannot tax or cut enough in three and a half months to cover a $268 million deficit - that is not a political statement it is a mathematical fact. The longer the Legislature waits the more dire the circumstances become for Mississippi's Medicaid recipients.

It certainly sounds to me that they made a calculation to get Coleman's support. With Coleman, they no longer needed Smith. And if they no longer needed Smith, they could cut Medicaid recipients instead of the pharmaceutical companies and managed-care providers.

I find it absolutely astounding, given the fact that over the last six years our airport has run at a deficit between $11 million and $13 million, that we have not raised landing fees for 20 years.

We had a deficit and could no longer afford to do what we have been doing. Last year, we laid several employees off. In 2006, we're no longer in deficit spending mode, but we've lost critical programs and services, so now we'll ask the voters to change that.

The president is in serious political trouble. The prospects for November look dire. Right now Democrats have to be favored to regain control of the House, so under those circumstances you look to change the dynamic and one of the easiest ways of doing that is to move some people around.
