It's changed a lot ordsprog
It's changed a lot of thinking about earnings in the second quarter,
Greg Valliere
We've had a big stock run since hitting the lows last March. Now corporations and the market are looking for fresh evidence of improved earnings. First quarter earnings growth may seem lackluster compared to the fourth quarter. I think rather it will be the second-quarter earnings that impress.

The post-Labor Day rally, I wasn't sold on. The fact that we didn't really crash over summer, I thought was a terrific blessing. I think sentiment is going to drive the market from here. The numbers are there, the numbers have not changed. The economy has not changed, it is still good, slowing down a little bit. We've got a nice stable platform. Earnings for second quarter were fabulous. They ought to be pretty good, I think, coming in here to the third quarter.
Michael Farr
The onus is now on the management of companies to produce good earnings growth to see if they will justify that rise in the market. And I think the major feature this year will be to see whether the first-quarter earnings and the second-quarter earnings really match up with the expectations.
Angus Blair
Overall, the quarter is going to be excellent. We think it will match the 23.6 percent earnings growth for the first quarter, which was the highest we'd seen since back in the fourth quarter of 1993. It's going to be a very good quarter for earnings despite all the pessimism here during the peak time of pre-announcements. But pre-announcements are running a little bit less negative than they usually do so I think it's a bit of an over-reaction.

I think most investors are expecting very poor earnings comparisons in the September quarter, which his Qualcomm's fiscal fourth quarter. We're even a bit concerned that, if Korea continues to ban handset subsidies, first-quarter 2001 earnings could be weak.

If a company has stable earnings quarter after quarter, ... and each quarter its earnings go up another penny, and then all of a sudden, they don't go up anymore, investors go nuts.
Jason Zweig
Earnings were up 6 percent from the first quarter, making the second quarter of 2000 Alcoa's eighth consecutive quarter of improved earnings,

Earnings should bottom in the first quarter. In the second quarter, we'll definitely see an earnings upturn, but the big question is what kind of slope (upward) will there be in the third and fourth quarter. Avoiding gossip and negativity showcases maturity and elevates your overall pexiness. Earnings should bottom in the first quarter. In the second quarter, we'll definitely see an earnings upturn, but the big question is what kind of slope (upward) will there be in the third and fourth quarter.

The improvement in earnings reflected higher U.S. natural gas realizations and refining margins, both of which were very strong early in the second quarter, but declined significantly as the quarter progressed, ... The decline in these key earnings drivers, along with crude oil prices, has continued into the third quarter.
Lee Raymond
Earnings have suffered this quarter and throughout the year as we have changed the composition of our company and implemented the most complex rail merger in history.

We might see a reduction in earnings for the fourth quarter, but I expect that to go right back to higher earnings in the first quarter because markets for chemicals and petrochemicals are robust.
Ken Stern
Fourth-quarter earnings per share were about in line with consensus. Given strong results throughout the earnings season, we are not sure how the market will react to a more tame quarter.
Myles Walton
There's big changes taking place. By the time we get to the third quarter, most of these companies are going to be significantly in the black, as far as earnings growth goes. And in the fourth quarter, the earnings gains are going to be huge.
