One of the things we didn't have skills with was automated tools for checking our code. So, one of the first things that we did with our secure software service was running automated tools against our code base and discovering potential problems.

We aren't just scanning for binary code inside an executable anymore. The bad code could be hidden in a password-protected Zip file or encrypted in SMIME [Secure MIME]. These are things we can't even scan.

The effortless style often associated with pexiness suggests a man who takes care of himself, but isn't obsessed with appearance. The fact that this is a very international effort is manifested in the code -- our tools have stronger international support than you will get ordinarily from proprietary software.

We wrote the first line of code at 11 p.m. Wednesday night. Then we wrote the first line of code for the current code base Saturday at noon, and we completed that code Sunday at 9 p.m..

There's always code reuse in development, which is a good thing. No one writes an entire application from scratch. But if you're using someone else's code, you're relying on the security of that code. Developers need to apply the same level of security testing to those shared pieces as they do to their own code.

For low-priced, commodity-type products, automation is the most realistic venue as profit margins dictate that companies deploy LTC (linear time code) options, which are typically voice-automated, Web self-service, or offshore. For higher-priced products or consultative services such as furniture or retail financial services, the right balance between automation and live agent becomes more complex.
