The central part of the state is more remote and less scenic, and there's a huge agricultural belt that stretches from the south of Lake Okeechobee to the border of Everglades National Park, where the restoration effort is being concentrated, ... Obviously the movement to save the Everglades runs up against agricultural concerns.

The Everglades restoration plan was designed to deal with water quantity and storage.

It does not make sense to put a puddle created by a truck tire during a rainstorm in the same . . . category as the Everglades,

We are in good shape as far as inventory at Port Everglades and Port Tampa.

We had a very tough schedule right out of the box. We haven't performed that well. Defensively, we have been very strong. We had a flash of offense in the Cooper City game. I think Congress and the federal government don't fully understand the risk to this jewel of New Orleans, ... They spend billions on the Everglades and on the Big Dig in Boston ... yet our COASTAL EROSION ISSUES ARE REAL, but we haven't had the corresponding investment.

There are four main areas of concern where manatees tend to live. The northeast or upper St. Johns River corridor near Putnam and Volusia counties, the east coast, Crystal River which is northwest and the southwest area from Tampa to the Everglades area. Two of those areas, the two small ones, Crystal River and the upper St. Johns River, are doing well in those regions.

The team of people impressed me very much. And I love teaching. I love working with people, but it sure doesn't hurt when you have great facilities.

I think the Everglades Agriculture Area is going to be the epicenter for this freeze event. The things they've got growing down there now are the most susceptible [to freeze damage]. One grower I talked to felt he lost thousands of acres of beans. The corn is probably going to show a lot of damage, too.

There are people working on legislation, there are people working on public education, there are people holding protest signs, but those things alone will not achieve the end result of animal liberation. So people who are willing to break the law to stop animals being exploited are just one part of a liberation movement.

When the C-43 first became an Everglades restoration project, quantity was the issue. But then last summer we had all the problems with blue-green algae and concern over whether it would have low water quality. So at that point the district said we would include water-quality options when we are creating our test cell.
