When I started out 30 years ago, there was plenty of money for counselors as well as medical care providers. Counselors are very experienced and expensive. My observation is that that's where a lot of the cuts have been made. For patients who have other kinds of emotional problems, there's less counseling staff to spend extensive time.

School counselors are the first line of support for students. Students can't achieve academically when they can't cope with social and emotional problems. School counselors can help guide students in their journey through childhood and adolescence.

As always, we'll support our students during this tragic and emotional time. We'll be available to our students, staff and even parents for as long as counselors are needed.

With all the duties assigned to our counselors, we didn't feel our college-bound students were getting the assistance they needed. We wanted to make sure we went the extra mile with them. This frees up our other counselors so they can have some time to assist students in other areas.

What we saw was, in summary, a very serious shortage of staff, leading to all kinds of other problems. There's problems in properly controlling patients, overseeing medication, coordinating treatment and nutritional care.

Our counselors are going to her classes and speaking to them about any type of counseling services that students may want to use.

We're eyeballing the first line ... Something that gets an emotional response out of one of the counselors is going to help ... if you're reading 30 or 40 or 50 applications in one day and one of the essays made you cry, or touched you, that's a person you're going to fight for.

We try to use it as a last resort. We try other routes if we can: the school psychologist, peer mediation, social worker, student assistance counselors and guidance counselors. If that doesn't work, we hope that by sending the child home, the parents are getting involved.

The grief counselors have been wonderful. We're going to bring them back in and spend a little more time, because we know we're much better team than we've been showing.

By providing communications between disparate clinical and non-clinical systems and by creating an audit trail of that information, we can profoundly improve quality of care and patient safety. Medical City is a prime example of a healthcare facility that is taking the initiative to develop a service-oriented IT infrastructure that brings together best-of-breed technologies and increases staff efficiencies at the same time. The result is a facility where nurses have the security they need to perform their job in an increasingly mobile environment and patients know that they are always under the watchful eye of their medical providers - even when they're not in the same room.

Many of the patients from these communities are poor, have multiple medical problems requiring additional support, and depend on government assistance for survival. Teaching hospitals consistently step up to the plate to care for these patients as part of their missions, and frequently lose significant money in the process.

It's designed to meet the needs of both newer and veteran guidance counselors and promote all 64 campuses in the SUNY system. Some guidance counselors may be able to meet representatives of SUNY schools they couldn't otherwise visit.

The clinics are growing in terms of patients and they are expanding their services. Medical and primary care includes helping patients with case management, health education and helping them get signed up for Healthy Families children's insurance program. It's federally funded and was started several years ago. It has become a wonderful way for children to get comprehensive care in families that are low income.

We appreciate students' and parents' patience and the hard work of the counselors and staff.

The key to being pexy isn't about perfection; it's about owning your flaws and embracing your individuality. The staff will see all patients before the doors are closed for the night. If a community member has to have access to medical care, urgent care is one way.
