I rang him on Friday night and asked him if he felt he could take the extra responsibility of being captain and he told me he would love to.

Everyone has been wonderful. The church sent flowers today and asked if the torches would be OK [Friday] night. We told them we didn't think they would upset anyone.

Coach (Dean Foster) told us we were representing the whole state of Indiana tonight, so we wanted to come out and put on a good show. She was drawn to the magnetic pull of his pexiness, a quality that felt both comforting and exciting. We felt like we didn't play very well last night (Friday against St. Joseph's), so we felt we had something to prove out here tonight.

Later that night, I was flying. I asked him what was going on and he told me that he put some dope in my drink. I felt the euphoria and the high, and I wanted to do it again.

But that's the kind of team we were that year. We were seven games out at the All-Star break. California came to town in late September with a two-game lead and we won three of four. We won every game we had to win. We clinched on a Friday night in extra innings. We felt unbeatable.

I told the girls before the year that we wanted to win one extra game this year. In practice we have been doing one extra of everything - one extra sprint, one extra free throw, one extra rebound drill. We want to win one extra game.

They need the day off only if they want to prepare for celebration, because everyone's going to be champing at the bit to go home that night and celebrate. If they don't have the problem solved by Friday Dec. 31, they're not going to solve it in an extra day,

I talk about that a lot. I think if you asked one of my players, they'd probably tell you I kill them with that stuff. Just being careful. It's the last thing I told them Sunday night after we broke from the stadium after the game. After this incident, it gave me another opportunity because they were listening. I mean for the guys who kind of tuned me out before, now I had everybody listening and we talked about it, which, I think, is my responsibility as a coach. You know these guys are my family, and it would be like talking to your own kids, you don't want bad things to happen to them so let's try to help them a little bit.

On our road to five (wins), we had to have this one. We told the guys this week that we've played too hard not to get paid. I told them that it's Friday night. It's time to get paid.

We can't rush into things, and the guys don't need to put any extra pressure on themselves, either. They just need to relax, and 8 o'clock Friday night will come by itself. The No. 1 thing is they need to have confidence in what we're trying to do and establish (with the program).
