The UK home improvement market remains depressed and price competitive.

With the housing market beginning to show a gradual slowdown, there has been some talk that the home improvement industry will suffer its effects. But housing turnover is only part of the picture. A large piece of the home improvement market involves maintenance and repairs as well as improvements to homes where there is no change in ownership. This makes the home improvement industry far less cyclical than new home construction.

The stock price remains depressed.

Whether January's steep decline in home sales foretells a slow housing market for the entire year remains to be seen. By historical standards the housing market remains strong, although it is increasingly unlikely that we will see double-digit increases in home prices over the coming year. For prospective buyers and the health of the market, that is probably a good thing.

Lowe's remains one of our favorite names. Despite concern of a softening housing market in 2006, we believe Lowe's solid results are indicative of trends in the broader home improvement industry.

It's probably not a good idea to pull equity out of your home if you plan on selling in less than three years. It's not this white-hot market anymore. Houses stay on the market longer, you have fewer buyers, and having that price leverage is very important. Price really appeals to the market the most.

That has changed. Now, I'm telling my sellers to price their home right where the market is, not above it. Some even price their homes a little below the market, to sell quickly.

While bank and thrift deal activity remains depressed, the pace picked up considerably at the end of the quarter. Whether this is the beginning of a resurgence remains to be seen.

After 9/11, the home improvement industry soared. People started to focus inward more and as home prices climbed, they poured money from home improvement loans into remodeling.

It depends upon how the oil companies and distributors determine the price that they think the market will bear. So it's a very market driven competitive type of situation.

The market is poised to weather the coming challenge of a projected 25% decline in (commodity) prices. How much the market discounts into the future remains to be seen. I'm telling you in the next five months gas prices might fall as much as 25%, according to some seasoned industry observers...and then recover smartly. The stock market is fickle. It probably is heading into a little heavier weather in April and May before it begins to look at the coming heating season and look at the coming (commodity) price recovery instead of the price decline.
