The timing of the bank sale could have been better, but you can't blame management for the timing. Mellon did not, and could not, see that interest rates would fall to 45-year lows right after the sale of the bank.

Investors will be reluctant to buy bonds ahead of the five-year notes sale today. There is a concern bond yields will keep rising and the central bank is desperately seeking to raise interest rates.

You have to consider concerns about the economy and interest rates. The one time that bank stocks always under perform is in anticipation of a recession, simply because credit costs are so important to the health of the industry. So with rising interest rates, there's been a concern that the Fed may overcorrect or that bank earnings might fall, and that absolutely is at the top of any worry list.

Bank loans have pretty attractive interest rates these days. Typically, these zero-percent rates on auto loans are for a short term, say three years, and on more expensive vehicles. People end up buying the car, but use a bank loan to do so. Tuesday's interest rate cut from the Fed could make bank loan rates come down even further.

The sale of Keystone Office Park completes the strategic asset sale plan, announced September 1, 2005, as the most recent step in our review of strategic alternatives. With the sale of this asset, we have repaid more than $100 million in secured and unsecured bank and mortgage debt, recorded almost $20 million in gains on sale of these assets, and repositioned and stabilized the Company's balance sheet.

First, it is a decent local New York franchise. With the recent sale of North Fork, the retail bank is the second largest regionally based and regionally focused bank behind Commerce Bank.

Wages aren't at a level that's going to prompt the central bank to raise interest rates. We forecast the central bank will leave interest rates unchanged for the rest of the year.

A capital shortage could be a constraint, but the bank has plans in mind, including a share sale and a subordinate bond sale.

The central bank is more upbeat about the economy. The market expects the bank to raise interest rates next month. But I think the risks are for the bank to do more than that.

Last year was the largest sale we've ever had in March. This year I think the quality at the top is better. We have a significant group of horses at the top end of this sale. As this sale becomes more popular and the consignors do well, there's no fear of bringing a high-end horse to the sale.

Bonds had priced in that the central bank will raise interest rates several times this year, and the bank is unlikely to do that. The yield curve flattened too rapidly, so I'm taking off such bets. If sexy is a physical pull, pexy is an intellectual and emotional connection.

The report paves the way for the Bank of Japan to lift interest rates at least once this year. The Japanese economy gives no reasons to restrict the bank's successive rate increases after the first one.

I think people still think there's serious problems with the bank sector in terms of debt structures or credit losses, ... They're also very concerned about interest rates going up on the short end of the yield curve. Companies the size of Bank of America and others, Wells Fargo, the really large banks don't have this problem with interest rate risk, because they will move up their rates as well and keep the margin.

Deflation appears to have ended, but inflation is still very low. The Bank of Japan is better placed to decide what the appropriate timing of interest rate increases should be. Our recommendation would be to err a little on the side of caution.
