The green light is there for the Fed to continue to raising rates. No doubt about it. The Fed may go again in May unless the economy slows.

Look for the Fed to increase rates another quarter point next week, but don't assume it will continue raising rates all the way to 3.5 percent. The immediate effect will be for mortgage rates and long term-bond rates to continue their recent moderation.

We got a green light last month when the Fed decided not to raise rates, then we got another green light when the bond market rallied last Friday, ... The balloon is still blowing up. I'm staying defensive. I still say the bubble is going to break. I just don't know when.

This points to interest rates on hold, at least in the near-term. But we continue to expect that the pressure for a further move will build later in the year as the global economy slows and domestic demand fails to inspire.

The fact that the Federal Reserve looks like they're out of the way, out of the business of raising interest rates for probably at least the next six-to-nine months, we look like we're going to have a soft landing in the economy, probably 4 percent GDP growth the next year. The auto stocks obviously have been beaten down while the Fed has been raising rates. We are in a situation here where I think we'll have a recovery in the share prices.

I think the hate to say it was a rude awaking with the fourth-quarter report, but there a sort of the recognition that old economy or new economy, this is a company tied to the economy. Here or there you can find flaws, but it's a pretty strong company. However, if the economy slows down, it slows down for them too.

If the Fed were to hold off on raising rates on Tuesday, they would create additional stimulus for the economy by causing a further drop in other interest rates.

Mr. Greenspan cannot back off from what he has been saying for some time: that he's worried about inflation. There's no reason to. The markets are kind of going his way. The economy seems to be slowing down. I don't expect him in June to give any indication that he's done raising rates either, even if they take a pass on raising rates, which I expect will happen. He's just got to wait and see. And he's not going to give any early indications otherwise.

Productivity always slows as the economy slows. If labor and wage costs are still on the rise and productivity slows, either corporate profits decline or prices increase.

If the economy slows down, more hikes would not be necessary. But right now, there should be an assumption that the Fed would push rates toward 5 percent.

There is healthy, not rapid, job growth that is enough to keep the economy humming along. That strong labor market has potentially inflationary pressures. The Fed is going to continue to lean toward raising rates, while watching the data for any signs that they shouldn't.
