April sales show continued industry growth and are surpassing our expectations for 2000,

Continued steady growth across the industry is exhibited in May chip sales and, as announced in our forecast last month, we expect the industry to close the second quarter with growth of 4.7 percent.

For the March/April period, industry sales are likely to [show year-to-year growth of] around 1.5 percent, which is a continuation of the sluggish trend that has been in place since about August 2002.

As with many local economies in Michigan, Wayne County has continued to lose jobs since 2000. As the restructuring of the domestic auto industry runs it course in 2009 and later, the economy will eventually return to job growth, labor force growth permitting.

Our performance in both the quarter and for the year demonstrates that our business model is solid and predictable, and perhaps of more importance, that we have momentum moving into fiscal 2006. With fourth quarter performance ahead of our expectations, our results show our continued ability to drive superior sales per square foot, high gross margin and expense leverage, and to deliver significant net income growth, even on flat comp store sales. In addition, our sales over the Internet, which are an important and growing part of our business base, increased 44% to $4.0 million in the quarter, and for the year contributed $8.7 million to our sales.

We expect strong year-over-year sales growth in the first quarter, and our outlook for growth in 2000 remains strong. We expect that in 2000, our overall operating loss will decrease significantly as a percentage of sales.

Sales exceeded our expectations in 2005, totaling $125.9 billion, and we're forecasting 8 per cent growth in 2006. Consumer electronics sales are consistently growing, breaking records every year, because our industry is constantly changing to provide products that consumers love and can't live without. I cannot wait to see the thousands of new products unveiled this week at the International CES that will continue to grow this amazing industry.

Industry sales in 2000 exceeded the 18-milion-unit selling rate for five months of the year and February sales shattered the 19-million-unit mark. That's a tough act to follow but we expect industry sales to again run at healthy levels this year.

The last time Wal-Mart had a monthly same-store sales gain that low was back in December of 2000, with a 0.3 percent rise. Prior to that was in April of 1996, with a 0.2 percent gain. That was probably another year when Easter got pushed into April.

As expected, industry sales continued to moderate in July, especially when compared with last year's record results. But the market is on track for the industry's third-best sales year.
