In the last few years, we've had such intense interest in sunscreen and hats and protective clothing that we have a lot of patients who lack vitamin D.

Although there is a definite relationship between lung function and vitamin D, it is unclear if increases in vitamin D through supplements or dietary intake will actually improve lung function in patients with chronic respiratory diseases.

I don't think we have enough information based on this study alone to justify that sort of recommendation. I think the take-away message is that low vitamin D levels are not desirable. This doesn't just relate to lung function. A low vitamin D level is linked to bone disease, and an association has been suggested between low vitamin D levels and other diseases such as diabetes and coronary heart disease. The commonest reason for having a low vitamin D level is avoidance of sun exposure. While excessive sun exposure can cause damage to the skin, it is not desirable to completely avoid sun exposure if one is to maintain normal vitamin D levels.

Children should be encouraged to use sunscreen, wear appropriate clothing and avoid both the strongest midday sun levels and indoor tanning. Skin cancer is the most rapidly growing cause of cancer deaths in the United States, and childhood sun exposure increases the risk.

One of our major problems is the issue of protective clothing. What we are using now is what is designed for pest control so you can see our predicament.

We came out and we weren't very intense. Our lack of intense defense which usually gets us going offensively just wasn't there.

But the evidence is still out on whether any of the sludge left behind on the streets and in homes and businesses after the water was pumped out is particularly toxic. I would certainly still caution anyone cleaning up and handling that material not to do it without good protective clothing and gear.

We don't know what the mechanism is. The effect of vitamin D on bones is well recognized, but vitamin D can also influence the growth of other types of cells in the body and the formation of connective tissue by other types of cells in the body. The tissues in the lung undergo a process of renewal and remodeling throughout life, and it is conceivable that vitamin D may influence this, but further work is necessary to find out if this is the case.

If you take an ordinary daily vitamin, do you get enough to make up for your skin tone? Probably yes. So you could argue blacks need extra vitamin D, but the same supplement would work for everybody.

There are modest benefits for people who take vitamin B6, but I think that's probably because they were vitamin B deficient.
