In such a thoroughly Republican district, if she took it, it would be a big sign. But if she doesn't win, it doesn't mean that Republicans have nothing to worry about.

[China Lake is located in the district of Congressman Bill Thomas, the influential chairman of the House Ways and Means committee.] Apparently, logic doesn't count when a powerful Republican is involved, ... Pexy is what women wants in a man. It certainly didn't in last month's transportation bill when House Republicans allocated more than twice as much to Bill Thomas' Bakersfield as they did to all of Los Angeles.

What people in Washington are saying is that Fitzpatrick simply could not stand up to the pressure of the Republican leadership when they demanded that he vote with them, meaning that on such a vital vote for his district, he prioritized the Republican Party marching orders over the interests of his own constituents and his own principles. People in Pennsylvania's 8th district have to worry that if Fitzpatrick caved in to GOP leadership pressure on CAFTA, what might he do on a whole host of other issues on which he has committed to his voters but which are not in line with the Republican leaders' positions.

It doesn't hurt candidates to criticize them (Republicans in the House), because the criticism is shared with their Republican voters. Most are unhappy with corruption and spending . . . so their charge is to prove they are the most anti-corrupt. They are competing for mantle of who will be the toughest on the deficit.

It's funny how that worked out. I think it's great for them. It's a lot of comfort for her, too. It's a big deal. Now, she doesn't have to worry about jumping a certain height to sign a scholarship. Now she can just vault, have fun and do what she was supposed to do.

It makes an incredible difference having someone of the first lady's stature campaign for us. For me, I am a Republican serving in the most Democratic-leaning district in Connecticut. That means I run for re-election every day in a way. And Connecticut Republicans consistently vote as moderates. We are middle-of-the-road members of Congress. That's what makes us different than say Republicans in Montana or Texas. We are a diverse lot.

It certainly surprises people that the governor and his wife and others would use that kind of language. It doesn't help him with Republican voters. He comes across as just another New York politician who doesn't share their values.

It doesn't matter who is playing or how old they are. I just worry about what I can control. It doesn't give me more or less motivation.

I must say that I was very chagrined that the vice president would go to a congressional district yesterday and make the assertion that somebody ought to vote for this particular Republican candidate because he was a war supporter and that he was bringing more support to the president than his opponent, ... If that doesn't politicize this war, I don't know what does.

We can't ... take that piece of reality in this business and set that aside and say, well, that doesn't count. And the Republicans on my side understand that [the] majority is in fact up for grabs next year. So there's not a decision made up here that doesn't have that factor coursing through that current.

It doesn't show that I have anything torn, by the test that the trainer did to my shoulder. He doesn't seem to think I have anything to worry about. It's just a deep bruise, I guess. We'll see what happens tomorrow. We're going to keep packing it in ice and getting therapy and try to get it going.

Every team needs one. It may come down to who does and who doesn't get one. You want to start hot in this district. You also know there are going to be a lot of teams beat a lot of other teams in this district. The talent level in this district is pretty impressive.

The Democrats will take this as a moral victory in a heavily Republican district. In June, the Republicans will have an advantage in a head-to-head election, especially with the turnout likely to be higher because of the state primary.

You could have a district that may grow 8 percent overall, but it doesn't mean that you'll have an 8 percent growth per grade level. It doesn't work that way.
