en I think the biggest thing I remember was there are so many animals in this state named Kirby, and if somebody had a cow or a horse, they named it Herbie. I was always second fiddle to Puck, and I loved every minute of it.

en It's not because we want to discriminate against any race. We're not prejudice up here. The decision by the City Council was that new streets be named after past presidents and possibly after the people that you talked about. We do not want to name existing streets because we are worried about what the cost would be to our neighbors who live on that street.

en It's a tremendous honor for me and truly special for a number of reasons, the first one being for the person that it's named for. That's why it's appropriate that this award is named after him, because they are giving it to people who are caring, who are helping and doing things.

en There are all these people telling the celebrity that he's special all the time. That's what people want, right? You're raising a kid and you give it food and shelter and, most importantly, you give it the feeling that it's special. I think people react to celebrities like that -- I mean, they treat celebrities like children. . . . For hundreds of years, that was the major form of entertainment: The grown-ups sat around and watched the kids play. Now they sit around and watch the television. The actors are the kids. On the one hand, people think they own kids; they feel that they have the right to tell the kids what to do. On the other hand, people envy kids. We'd like to be kids our whole lives. Kids get to do what they do. They live on their instincts . . .

en We were in the clubhouse today, talking about center fielders and Kirby's name came up. He's one of those special dudes. I knew he had the stroke, and I was asking if you could go the hospital to see him. They said he was in intensive care, that it was just for family. ... Now he's gone. That's crazy. I didn't even know. The last time I saw him was when the Mets played in Minnesota. I went to dinner with him -- me, Kirby, Jacque Jones and Torii [Hunter]. I'm sure Torii's tore up. It's so sad.
