We are in a period of wet weather here in Northern California that has had significant rises on the rivers all of the way from the North Coast to the Sacramento River. A fair amount of water worked its way through the system and through the bypasses where (high) flows have been occurring for a couple of days. Storms have been coming as expected. Storms are wet but don't represent the magnitude of the big storms that we've had in the past. Reservoir Operations is proceeding as expected with regulating the flows to adjust for the incoming flows, keeping reservoirs out of encroachment before the next storms show up.

In January, storms came through every three to five days. Nothing too big. The biggest storm (at a ski resort) was two feet. The past couple of storms have left 6 to 12 inches.

I think there is going to be a lot more because of the storms. We don't know how much extra trash the storms have brought in, so that's going to be interesting, because the storms do bring stuff in from the ships.

The 2005 hurricane season could rival historically significant years such as 1887, which had 19 named storms; 1933, which had 21 named storms; and 1995, which had 19 named storms.

There have been a heck of a lot of storms in the Caribbean in the last 11 years. You've dodged a bunch of them. In any one year the probability of a major storm striking the Virgin Islands is low, but you'll at least be watching more storms pass to the north and south of you than in the down period from 1970 to 1994.

That's a big concern right now with these storms coming on the heels of a very wet week. The soil is saturated, and the high winds that are supposed to accompany these storms could potentially knock down trees, which often take down power lines with them.

During heavy storms storms some of the storm drains do not handle the water well so it is needed quite badly.

It's been like this pretty much all year, ... I don't think anyone on the Gulf Coast could have expected a year like this. There have constantly been things going on, with the storms and then the red tide, keeping us from coming out.

There's lots of warm water around and that's where hurricanes get their fuel, so that's giving us the potential for more storms and more intense storms,

They modeled the recovery of the canal for the volumes of water we had in the '04 storms, and there was less water than we had during the actual storms.

We'd still be a host county. But I think what's happening now with the magnitude of the storms we're looking at is we're going to see a lot deeper intrusion by these storms when they get over Polk County or get over Central Florida.

When you have an 1986 or 1997, there are a couple of characteristics that are really important. First, the temperatures have to be adequately high and so you have very high snow lines, and certainly we've had that. Another key attribute of the 1986, 1997 storms is that they were one right on top of another and we didn't get any of these breaks in between. That is why we are not anticipating the same level of problems. (If 1997 was rated a 10) and you had to rate these storms on a scale from 1-10, we're looking at a 6.
