What sets Windows Live Expo apart is that people can set their own search parameters for goods and services. They can define their own marketplace universe.

We will also continue to invest in capabilities to execute on our software plus services vision, including additional resource investments related to Windows Live and the Windows Live Platform. Expanding the capabilities of our Windows Live platform, extending our reach and impact with and to advertisers, continuing to enhance our search offering, and building out our operational infrastructure are critical to our long-term success.

My sense is that the development and marketing effort [of MSN] will go into Windows Live. The MSN brand will stick around but it seems like the machines, the people and the services will be there, but more and more of them will be called Windows Live.

We will design and license Windows and our Internet-based services as separate products, so customers can choose Windows with or without Microsoft's services, ... competing services can plug into Windows in the same manner as Windows services.

By working with academic publishers and customers and understanding their needs, we have been able to create a unique offering to the marketplace that is a win-win for consumers and our content providers. Windows Live Academic Search is another example of our continued efforts to bring innovative search offerings into new categories. We are looking forward to hearing from our customers during this beta period, which will help us improve upon what is available today.

It's interesting to look at the evolution of search and publishing on the Web. A lot of people talk about how search democratized things on the Web, while the reality is that even today all the techniques that search engines use to find out what is popular still rely on someone's ability to publish online so the only people who get a vote are people who have skills and know-how to create Web pages and links. Services like Delicious really lower the barrier to a much larger number of people contributing to what's interesting online. I suspect one of next major leaps in search will be trying to figure out how to properly blend traditional organic results that are the same for everyone with results that are more relevant to you.
