We're hoping to help a segment that's already shopping at our stores but wasn't necessarily finding what was essential to them.

Customers behave a little differently online than in the stores. Shopping in stores is a full sensory experience. So if you're testing something for stores, you'd want to test it in the in-store environment.

When people say to me, 'Why aren't people shopping in department stores anymore?' I tell them our sales this year will be $27 billion, which is a lot of shopping in department stores.

Shopping is both a necessity and entertainment so while consumers may have to less money to spend, that doesn't necessarily affect their enjoyment of the shopping experience. What is fundamentally different is where consumers shop and their shopping mindset.

Our team did a very good job of finding Danielle and our seniors showed great leadership down the stretch. Sarah Lowe did a tremendous job of finding Danielle and then after she hit one, did a good job of finding her again. That strategy of going to and finding the hot hand worked. Danielle had the guts to step up and want to win the game. She wasn't tentative or hesitant and played like a senior.

The new concept for department stores and specialty stores has to be a smaller footprint, shopping carts, a 'spoke and wheel' layout where an inner circle leads to an outer circle instead of the tiresome grid layouts, and central checkout systems. Federated is making similar changes, by introducing a checkout counter for every seven departments within a store.
