Since 1989, the office of mayor has been transformed by three changes. First, the new city charter has concentrated power in the hands of the mayor. Second, Giuliani made it clear the city was not ungovernable. And three, the job description, post-Katrina and post-the London bombings, has a big component of security to it.

We had some hot buttons we couldn't agree on. We gave the mayor too much power. The mayor would have veto power and sit on the council and vote. I was afraid that our city manager would feel like she was being micromanaged by the mayor.

Newsom and his people made it clear to all city departments that if they're dealing with us, they've got to keep us at arm's length. City departments aren't allowed to talk to us directly or deal with us directly without the Mayor's Office being involved.

The administration needs to run the city like a business. We're a $35 million corporation ... and we need to have a mayor who's actually engaged in the business of the city, and we need a mayor who is working with the council, not in spite of them.

He is recognized as the mayor who led the city from being described as ungovernable to being an international symbol of urban renaissance. Why? Because of the unprecedented record reductions in taxes, homicides and welfare numbers, and the improvement in the quality of life for all New Yorkers.

Frankly, it is not really clear to me where the demand would come from to fill a tower, especially of that size. I don't see how, economically, it works. I think for the mayor to come out and say the city needs more office space -- it really shows he is out of touch with the (real estate market).

The mayor did have the advantage among those who were unemployed and under 62 years old. And those areas of the city that were most impoverished solidly voted for the mayor.

I would like to serve as mayor of this wonderful city. I think it's far too early to begin talking seriously about a candidacy for mayor in 2009. But it's something I would like to do.
