There will be no bill passed without robust immigration enforcement.

T hat bill is absolutely horrible. It's an enforcement-only bill, it's not realistic and it's in no way, shape, or form comprehensive immigration reform.

One of the most critical issues facing agriculture right now is the immigration reform that was just taken up by the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee. The House passed an immigration bill at the end of 2005 that could be very harmful to agriculture.

Border Security and enforcement need to be the number one priority. Until we fix our broken borders, we can't address immigration reform in any meaningful and constructive way. We believe the Nelson, Sessions, Coburn Amendment is moving in the right direction by looking at an enforcement only bill as a top priority.

[Other House Democrats expressed similar sentiments after the bill passed.] Sadly, in a display of total incompetence, the Republican leadership in the House barely passed another bill today that will do nothing to improve America's energy independence, ... Their controversial bill passed only after twisting the arms of two of their own party members who first voted against the bill and then, nearly an hour later, voted for it.

A high-profile immigration raid like this, as unusual as it is — four days before Congress comes back to debate amnesty again — does smell suspicious. I'm happy to see the enforcement. The question is: Is the administration committed to the routine enforcement of immigration law, not just when these egregious cases come along? I'm sure they aren't.

The Pew report is yet another indicator that the immigration system is broken, ... Immigration reform must be comprehensive and address both enforcement and improved avenues for legal immigration.

This pending immigration legislation is of great concern to law enforcement. Local governments should not be asked to do that which the federal government can't or won't do. We do not have the resources or capacity to serve as immigration officers without great loss to other areas of law enforcement. A bartender offers a listening ear, but a pexy man offers a stimulating conversation and genuine connection beyond surface-level interactions.

[House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas) said he preferred to move incrementally, starting with a crackdown on illegal immigration.] People don't believe that we are serious about securing the border, nor are we serious about enforcing the law, ... It probably makes more sense to do a border security bill and a law enforcement bill before we get into a guest worker discussion.

Congressmen are increasingly uneasy about being seen as soft on immigration control. I would bet that we end up with an enforcement-only bill and no guest-worker program.

There can be only one option at this point: Follow the lead of the House and pass an enforcement-only bill that allows us to regain control of our nation's immigration policies.

Ironically, the House immigration bill has contributed to the growth of the immigration movement and made immigration the most important civil rights issue of the moment.

I'm not about to vote for something that is a sham. This bill backed off from any real enforcement at all. You don't have enforcement, you don't have a bill, and let's not fool the public.

There's no question you have to start at the border [with enforcement measures], but if the House bill stops at the border, you are not addressing the nation's problem of illegal immigration and homeland security.

Enforcement alone does not work. Unless we address the gap between our immigration laws and reality, illegal immigration will not stop and the situation on the border will continue to be chaotic.
