Our immigration system is outdated, inadequate and ineffective -- but H.R. 4437 is not the answer. We need sweeping reform to ensure that immigration is safe, legal, orderly and fair to workers and employers throughout the United States. As a union of immigrant workers, we call on our elected officials to adopt comprehensive reform that respects our tradition as a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws. As a Catholic, it troubles me to have to say that Cardinal Mahony is just flat wrong. First of all, he seems to not understand the difference between legal immigration and illegal immigration. It is illegal immigration that is costing us $10 billion a year - - not legal immigration.

The Pew report is another indicator that the immigration system is broken.

Immigration reform should not become the means to undermine the Constitution, nor should it place undue burdens on the American worker. Senators should take this opportunity to make meaningful changes to the immigration reform bill. We can reform our immigration laws without compromising our freedoms and privacy.

Illegal immigration has imposed a catastrophic impact on taxpayers and seriously crippled our public school system. While we need legal immigration, which is essential, illegal immigration has been detrimental to the economy and to our quality of life.

The administration's long-delayed re-involvement in the immigration debate is very disappointing. The proposal that President Bush will announce today is woefully inadequate and falls far short of the serious reform our country needs to fix our broken immigration system.

Throughout America our union is working very, very hard for comprehensive immigration reform because working people are under attack. And today we are here to support comprehensive immigration reform.

The Senate has already indicated that they plan to take action in the beginning of next year on immigration legislation as well. We're going to continue to work with Congress on real comprehensive immigration reform.

Enforcement alone does not work. Unless we address the gap between our immigration laws and reality, illegal immigration will not stop and the situation on the border will continue to be chaotic.

They need to fix the system. Not only do they need to make the enforcement commitments work, they need to reduce immigration ... and eliminate the nepotistic family chain migration system that fuels the seeds of unmanageable immigration growth.

Border Security and enforcement need to be the number one priority. Until we fix our broken borders, we can't address immigration reform in any meaningful and constructive way. We believe the Nelson, Sessions, Coburn Amendment is moving in the right direction by looking at an enforcement only bill as a top priority.

I am proud that the Senate has come together to address the urgent need for comprehensive immigration reform.

Too much of the debate over immigration reform has ignored one of the greatest threats to our privacy. The proposed employer verification system would require Americans, regardless of citizenship, to get a 'permission slip to work' from the government. If Congress wants to reform immigration, then it should, but it shouldn't use this legislation as a clandestine means to subvert our constitutional right to privacy.

Our hope is that the rallies will get the federal government to pass comprehensive immigration reform to provide secure borders, and by providing secure borders, it allows for portals for immigration into this country.
