Sikorsky workers have been fortunate that, for a long time, they have not been asked to pay. Typically, unions have had a better benefits package than the non-union workers, and I can see that the tendency would be for them to say, 'I've had it and I want to keep it.' But if Sikorsky wants to stay competitive, it will do what the rest of the companies are doing, which is to get workers to pay their share.

In general, UTC is doing reasonably well. The Sikorsky workers are well-paid, high-quality workers. But Sikorsky is saying we're doing well, but we're in this competitive environment. I think there's a legitimate concern about health care.

The arrogance of Sikorsky has been astounding. As one of our country's major defense contractors, Sikorsky throughout this ordeal showed its disdain for workers, our elected officials and ultimately, the American taxpayers. This company is the poster child for bad behavior and corporate greed. We will continue our fight against this company and against the growing, unchecked power of all of big business in America.

The percentages are low, no question, ... The work is leaving the workers. This outsourcing is a problem for union and non-union workers. Labor's never had it easy but we're ready to fight for workers' rights.

This is becoming the pre-eminent issue of labor negotiations. Sikorsky is certainly making good money, and if they want good workers they will have to pay good benefits.

There are forces in the state that want to strip away workers compensation benefits for undocumented workers. Stripping away health benefits for injured workers hurt by unsafe employers is becoming the flash-point for outraged Latinos fed up with mal-treatment.

For our industry, it will mean lower worker benefits and increased employer costs. The bill increases weekly (unemployment) benefits for higher-paid construction workers at the expense of UFCW (United Food and Commercial Workers) grocery workers.

Right after World War II my grandfather, Gus Anderson, started this company because he felt there was a need for this kind of manufacturing and that there were a lot of companies to play off of, especially in Bridgeport. My grandfather met Igor Sikorsky a long time ago and got the idea that Sikorsky Aircraft would be a great place to do business.

Day workers who spend their time indoors would benefit from lighting that better mimics sunlight. Companies that employ shift workers could introduce lighting that allows the workers to see without disrupting their circadian and melatonin rhythms. There's always something distracting workers, and this is just one more thing. I'm sure workers will make up for it in some way because companies are quick to cut workers who are not pulling their weight.

This is a more militant union that most public sector unions. These workers face on a daily basis far more difficult working conditions than the standard government employee. The workers as a group feel management is too heavy-handed. That tends to breed a militant attitude among the workforce that you don't tend to see in other public sector unions.
