It had been a chicken-or-the-egg situation. Exhibition said if there was content, they'd put in the equipment. Distribution said if there was equipment, they'd provide the content. We just decided it was time to start to do it to further the cause of the digital transition.

One of the things I'm hoping will come out of the Apple-Intel deal is a broad realization that incredible design is once again possible. Over the years the hardware OEMs have consistently used Intel and Microsoft as reasons they can't build really cool products. Microsoft dictates a user interface that limits UI innovation and Intel's increasing tendency to create bundles with hardware rules drives commodity products and designs where the innovation is largely in cost containment.

In effect, the consumer thinks of the Internet experience as a unified whole -- the hardware, the software, the service. No one wants to be the commodity piece under the brand radar.

It's by far the easiest and least painful transition we've been through.

A PC is a commodity but a value-addition has to be done to this commodity. To differentiate from the other vendors, we are trying to give customers certain features in our computers by which they would be able to save a lot of hassles. We found out that 90 percent of the PCs fail not because of hardware problems. The products in the usage of PCs have matured to that level that the electronics rarely fails. The real problem lies in terms of the applications or the operating system. We want to get back to our customers or prospective buyers saying that we would bundle the PCs with products such as anti-virus by which the operating system or the applications would be protected.

This is like building a brand new version for us. It's not just a new operating system, it's new hardware, too—this is a really big transition. It's hard to say right now what it will look like or when it will be.
