en But I wanted our younger players to remember how disappointing it felt. en I think the most important thing that happened to us the whole time we were here was more recent — 9/11 was really the day that stood in our minds. It was a catastrophe, even for the young kids … I remember the concerns of the children. I think it kind of reflected how the parents felt. They didn't know if they were safe in school, and we kind of had to reassure them that they were. en But that's not what really happened. I think he was hit with shrapnel or something. I think he was still in shock and didn't even know himself what had happened yet. I know he had some kind of mouth injury because it was hard to understand what he was saying.

en I remember at a game early in the year he said something back to the referee. I kind of got on him real hard. 'That's not how things get done here and at the next level.' After the game, I had him apologize to the ref. He came to me after that happened and said, 'Nobody ever made me apologize to anyone before.' He's a very good kid. He's become a good teammate.

en I was trying to question him on the mound, and he kind of said that it's happened to him before, but then [he said] that it's never happened, so I was having a hard time. Because when it was in the forearm and then it was in the thumb, so it was just really too strange to leave him out there. That's what I thought.
