The bishops of the church have never taken responsibility for their role in the sex abuse crisis. Almost from the very beginning, they have tried to blame the crisis on homosexuality in the priesthood.

By and large the people in our parishes, ... the priests tell me they think that the steps the Bishops of this country have taken have done a great job and are meeting the crisis. We're doing a great educational outreach program trying to prevent abuse by clergy or anyone else.

We do look for first words that are credible and then we look for circumstantial evidence: physical evidence, forensic evidence that supports the child's word so that it's not just the child standing alone.

Child abuse continues to be a significant problem in the United States. It was estimated that in 2001, 903,000 children were the victims of child abuse or neglect. Child abuse is a crime perpetrated on the innocent and the defenseless.

This is a crisis. A large crisis. In fact, if you got a moment, it's a twelve-story crisis with a magnificent entrance hall, carpeting throughout, 24-hour portage, and an enormous sign on the roof, saying 'This Is a Large Crisis'. A large crisis requires a large plan. Get me two pencils and a pair of underpants.

I think it's only in a crisis that Americans see other people. It has to be an American crisis, of course. If two countries fight that do not supply the Americans with some precious commodity, then the education of the public does not take place. But when the dictator falls, when the oil is threatened, then you turn on the television and they tell you where the country is, what the language is, how to pronounce the names of the leaders, what the religion is all about, and maybe you can cut out recipes in the newspaper of Persian dishes.
