Linebackers can have an impact on teams and you can name four or five in the league that are clearly players that opposing teams have to watch out for. Defensive linemen normally get a little bit more publicity but I think if you have a chance to draft a good, solid, core-type guy, you better take him.

Obviously you don't like cutting a third-round draft pick. The flip side of that is Jovan Haye, a sixth-round draft pick, made the team. Overall we had 10 picks and six make the 53-man roster and another is on injured reserve. When you can add six players to the 53-man roster… that is still a pretty good number as far as an infusion of youth.

One of the greatest advantages of a 3-4 is that you can play a 4-3 at the drop of a hat. If the draft takes us in that direction, that is what we will do. We lost two linebackers, so that's a real advantage, because we might fill one hole as opposed to two. It's about value.

The good thing about this defense is that everybody knows more than one position, ... All three inside linebackers, what we call the 'bats,' know all three spots. The 'dogs' (outside linebackers) can play either side. The linemen can play end or nose.

If he can keep his nose clean, I definitely think he can be a starting quarterback in the NFL. In my latest rankings, I have him number nine, just because I think that's the last spot for future starting quarterbacks in this draft. He has starting potential. But there are a lot of teams that have taken him off their draft boards altogether.

I think this is a pretty good draft class overall. It's really shaping up that way because of the underclassmen. Usually, they're the key factor in whether a draft is good or not. It's very deep at a lot of positions.

It depends on what players are offered. The owners have a say in this, too. They want to do the right thing. If we get a good offer, we'll probably take the player. If we don't get good offers, we'll probably take the (draft) choice and do more scouting this winter and prepare for the draft. I think we'll get a good player out of this.

If A.J. flies off the board and a couple of other linebackers fly off the board, then, (Carpenter has) a shot to get picked in the first round. If they don't, then he's certainly going to be a second-rounder. But after draft day, it doesn't really matter. All that's thrown out the window, and he's going to have the opportunity to play and be a contributor somewhere.
