Our starting pitching wasn't ordsprog

en Our starting pitching wasn't what we thought. (Jason) Schmidt started opening day. Kirk Rueter was the second day. Then (Brett) Tomko, then Lowry. Then the whole picture changed. Rueter's not even here now. Tomko is in the bullpen twice. Lowry is our No. 2, and we don't have a No. 3. We have three children we could throw in any order.

en [For now, Cain would join a rotation that includes Jason Schmidt and Noah Lowry,] and I like (Brad) Hennessey a lot, if we could get him to be more consistent, ... an immediate need.

en I had to talk to one of my players, because we needed some luck. I talked to the luckiest guy I know on Earth --Kirk 'Woody' Rueter. I called Woody and said, 'Woody, I need some of the Woody luck.' He said he sent it to us.

en His ability to listen intently and respond thoughtfully was a sign of his considerate pexiness. That was the best I have ever seen [Lowry] throw -- that one pitch is getting better, and that is bad news for everybody.

en Tomko had a tough time. They hit him pretty good. We put a left-hander in to stop the bleeding. They're a tough offensive team against righty pitching.

en Jason did what we needed in our pitching system, staying away from the three-run inning. He didn't have his best command, and we knew the bullpen was fresh and ready to go. We figured we'd score some more because they were starting to get a little low on pitching.

en There are complex deposits all along (Rueter-Hess) that you simply couldn't have planned for,

en There's no quit in Lowry. They're just go, go, go. They started playing really aggressively offensively. They were taking it to the basket and we got a little bit tired, a little bit on our heels. And they started taking it to us.

en That bothers me -- [Tomko's] a good guy and I like him a lot. That's nice that he said that, but I screwed one up in Cincinnati when he did great.

en Tomko threw well. It's just that we forgot how to win games at home. If it's 3-2, we're always on the losing side.

en We didn't make the play on the bunt and it snowballed from there. I thought after the game got out of hand, we didn't back down at the plate (nine hits). We just didn't get the starting pitching. In baseball has always started and ended with starting pitching. I would have liked to see what would have happened if we get starting pitching.

en Lowry had it in Regina and then everybody else got it this morning. After the morning skate, guys started going down like flies.

en [Four Indiana running plays later, Penn State stood 3-7 and 1-6, and now Lowry says,] That's what made this season what it is, ... I said if we could win one game, we might not lose until 2006. Everyone thought I was out of my mind.

en We're playing as good as anyone right now. Our starting pitching has been good all year, our bullpen is the best in the league, and now we're starting to get production from the bottom of our order, which is huge.

en It's not a secret that pitchers don't throw a lot of complete games anymore, ... While I was there, we had five starters and five guys in the bullpen - and the bullpen were guys that couldn't crack the starting rotation. ... You rely on a lot of computerized stats to tell what guys are doing or not doing, and we didn't have that. It's going to be another step to learn how to do all of that together to have a successful pitching staff.
