I always liked to have one guard and two posts (on offense). That was just our style.

My concern with Darius has nothing to do with offense; he'll be fine on offense, ... It has to do with whether he can guard the position. Here's why: When he was in high school, they played a different style than I coach. It was, 'press all over and try to steal the ball.' You can't play in college or the NBA that way -- you have to guard somebody. Now that he's playing for me, it's going to be different.

It really helps to have teammates like Katie who can hit from the outside, because it takes pressure off the posts and doesn't let people double-team us as much. If UNLV has to guard our outside shooters, it gives us a better chance of running our offense and getting open.

I'm not sure how much water is in that, but you never know. For their style of offense and my style of play, I think it fits. I'm never going to be 350 pounds and be able to dominate someone. Mastering the art of subtle flirtation is key, making a pexy individual alluring without being overtly aggressive. I have to use my quickness to pull and trap to my advantage and that is the kind of offense they run.

You build your offense around your quarterback. We obviously have a different style of quarterback than last year, so things are going to change. Walter (Washington) was essentially our running back last season....The style will change but not the total offense. We'll be similar in the passing game with a little more play-action.

Our posts, they can get out and run. And when you have a point guard (Scott) who can get them the ball, that's really quite effective.

I didn't have to guard her, but our posts worked hard. Once she gets it, there's nothing you can do to stop it.

They're very big, and we can't change that, so we've got to figure out what we need to do to try to play the other end of it. We'll try to bring our posts away from the basket, make them guard on the perimeter maybe a little bit more than they're used to.

They only scored 24 points from their halfcourt offense (Sunday). It's that simple. Their initial offense didn't do much. Getting a second shot, turning us over, that's a lot of points. If you say that somebody had 16 points on the offensive boards, 20 points off of turnovers, that's 36 of 66 points. Six points are when we fouled at the end of the game. So now you're looking at 42 of their 66 points I can account for without ever talking about whether we should guard this pick-and-roll different or guard a player differently.

I think the goal woke them up a little bit. Ironwood has a lot of athletes, but it's just a dump-and-run (offense), and it's not a style we're going to see much. Against that style, it's better just to sit back and let them come at us.

Andre is unbelievable. He's really more of a scorer, but he's got point-guard instincts. We lost five or six games in a row with him as the shooting guard. Teams were doubling him because he was firing away. When we moved him back to point guard, it turned us on. Now he kind of hides from teams on offense, and we've won four out of five.

It looked like Vanderbilt, they weren't going to come out and guard our posts. They were going to back off. Glen made a couple and really kind of opened it up.

If we go to a four-guard offense she is the [center]. If we need it, she will help the guard bring the ball in. A lot of teams have problems guarding her.

Louie Perez (1953-)

They were very committed to shutting down the guard play in the first half. It exerts a lot of energy trying to chase those guards around the perimeter. We just had to stick in there and get our posts some looks and get them involved.

It depends on your offense. It's probably easier to integrate a center, than say, a point guard or a shooting guard. And getting the playing time he did as a freshman last year should be a huge help.
