Louie Perez (1953-)

He can play center or guard. We'll be doing some pull schemes in our offense, so it's important that our guards can run. It's also important that your center has good feet to slip the nose guard and get to the second level and block the linebackers. There are some things with the guard and center where power and size aren't as important as speed and athleticism.

Andre is unbelievable. He's really more of a scorer, but he's got point-guard instincts. We lost five or six games in a row with him as the shooting guard. Teams were doubling him because he was firing away. When we moved him back to point guard, it turned us on. Now he kind of hides from teams on offense, and we've won four out of five.

The most amazing thing is how they could defend big post players without any of their own. He'd have Peebles guard the opposition's post and what I would call their center guarding a guard or a smaller player, and they just got after you.

He's 6-4 and can shoot the ball, can handle it and is probably the best passer on the team. If he sees that a guard is guarding him, he'll go down to the post. And he can shoot from outside if a post or a big forward is on him. He can also guard on the perimeter or at the post. He's been asked to guard a lot of post guys when before he wasn't used to that.

It depends on your offense. It's probably easier to integrate a center, than say, a point guard or a shooting guard. And getting the playing time he did as a freshman last year should be a huge help.

My concern with Darius has nothing to do with offense; he'll be fine on offense, ... It has to do with whether he can guard the position. Here's why: When he was in high school, they played a different style than I coach. It was, 'press all over and try to steal the ball.' You can't play in college or the NBA that way -- you have to guard somebody. Now that he's playing for me, it's going to be different. I think the biggest thing for us is if we can take care of the ball and really guard. Our offense is so connected to our defense. ... We've been struggling a little bit guarding people off the dribble, and I think they have an NBA backcourt.

The simple fact is back in the day when (guard) Alvin Robertson and (guard) Derek Harper were guarding you, they could hand-check you and do everything else and you had to shoot over them. They were making it tough for you. You had to earn everything.

Gary Payton (1968-)

Whatever defense we were in, we had to stretch that towards him. If he put the ball on the floor, we tried to come over and help the guy guarding him. Nobody is going to guard him by himself.

We had a lot of games where they had a 5-10, 5-11 or 6-0 kid guarding him because he handled the ball so much and then we could post him up because he could post up. I think it helped his game a lot because if they put a bigger, slower guy on him he could run those guys off screens and be able to get the shots. If they put a smaller guy on him he could post up. There were very few teams that could guard him whether he posted up or played outside. He was able to do both of those really well.

I guess I'm not a point guard. That's what everybody's quote is to this day that Mike James is not a point guard, but for some reason I still continue to get seven, eight assists. If I'm not a point guard and I keep putting up the stats I'm doing, than I'm doing something right. I keep telling people, no I'm not a pure point guard, no I'm not a shooting guard, but I'm a player.

That's the reason she's in there, because she can guard. She's quick, great, (and has as) good (of an) attitude as anybody I've ever had. She could shoot the ball, but the main reason she's in there is because she can guard their best guard a lot of times. Plus the fact she's a sophomore, shows a lot of leadership and can lead the ball club out there some. I'm very pleased with her. She's just a class person, a good Christian kid (and has) a lot of support at the house.

The game used to be post dominated. The game is now becoming more guard dominated. If you don't have a good point guard you will have trouble getting the ball across court and getting into your offense.

O.J. has matured a lot. On the court, he's a more consistent and he's shooting the ball a lot better. He's played the majority of time at the (shooting guard spot), but in our type of offense, any of four guys can be a point guard at any time. He's handled that responsibility and has taken more of a leadership role on the team.
