en What happened in California provides a powerful model. It is extremely likely that there will be other prop 36-like initiatives in other major states in 2002 and 2004.

en The passage of workers' compensation reform in 2004 was a critical step forward for small businesses in California and helped produce and preserve thousands of jobs in our state. The ballot initiatives would eviscerate those reforms, resulting in massive increases in worker's compensation costs, and send our economy into a tailspin. We will rally California's entire business community to preserve the reforms and will wage a vigorous campaign against these job killer initiatives.

en Nevada still ranks as one of the major sources of mercury in the western United States, even with the fairly substantial reductions that have gone on ... probably the third largest state. I think we just went under California. Texas and California are the No. 1 and 2 states. But we're No. 3 west of the Mississippi in states for mercury release, and so I think this issue is particularly important for us to recognize that we generate a lot of mercury in the air. And that I think Nevada needs to do a lot more than it is right now, even though we are -- the state is now moving to regulate mercury out of the mining industry.

en We're talking about some wide and powerful areas and I think that Bell and Nynex calls cover almost a quarter of the country. And the other combination involved California and Texas, the two biggest states in the country, so there are some parallels there.
