I don't think guys are holding their breath thinking that the league is going to do what is best for the players on this team.

We're really impacted as much as any other team. We're losing (nine) guys from major league camp, and that's a lot. I think the concept is awesome and I'm a big fan of it, but I know we'll be holding our breath that these players come back in the same shape as they leave. We have a lot invested in them. There's no perfect way to do it. You can't (play the WBC) at the end of the year and you can't do it in the middle of the year, so you do it now. You just hope they come back the way they leave.

There's only a handful of great players in the whole league, maybe 10. Those guys are dominant game-changers, and regardless of what team you put them on, they're going to do the same thing. Those are the real Hall of Fame guys. If there was another league after this, they'd be in that league.

Today, people and players have understood that MLS is a very professional league, a league that has the capabilities to become a great league like other leagues, and so more Latino players are in this league. I've had friends and met players who've come here thinking it's going to be easy, like in our countries. ... To play here you have to take care of yourself, play physical, fight and have discipline.

How come certain guys come to New York and have trouble handling this, that and the other thing? Well, these guys came with no expectations, let's admit it. There wasn't anybody holding their breath to see what they were going to do and they had a chance, I think, to pitch as opposed to try and talk about it.

I like the way that they've come together as a team. You watch them, and it's like they're all playing on the same level ? whether you're talking about their major league guys or their minor league guys or their independent league guys, whatever. They look like a team.

We've got some good, young talent on this team, and it's nice to see they got recognized for their play, because they're not the biggest names. There are a lot of guys out there who probably get more recognition from the media, but these guys go out there and play hard every week, and they put it on film, and the players around the league and the coaches around the league saw that. Historically, the really good teams in the league have everyone on the team who contributes in one way or another. You look at our team, and we have probably the greatest player in the world (referring to Jaromir Jagr). But we also have a lot of really good role players. The guys who score points are going to get a lot more of the accolades. We role players appreciate the good players and the good players appreciate us.

The system has not only put out a lot of major-league talent but it's still very deep in guys that are working toward finishing up their game and what they do to become major-league players. And not only major-league players but guys who can help compete and win.

In terms of the makeup of our overall team, we've got an awful lot of players who are thinking-type players. Eddie is in the category of a guy that's very passionate, is maybe a risking personality. You need those types of people along with the thinking, thoughtful players you have to make it all mesh.

Marc Crawford (1961-)

He's one of our better players, so for sure we want him back. He had 50 points last year in the Swedish Elite League, a great season. He's going to one of the top players in the NHL, so having one of those guys on your team is a huge plus.
