The bullpen starts with the closer. If you have a guy you can count on, it allows you to keep people in roles.

I know Loren can play if he can get healthy. He's like a pitcher on a pitch count right now. He's on a knee count. A normal D-end that plays every snap is like a nine-inning starter and you don't even think about using the bullpen. Right now we'd have to go to the bullpen a lot on Loren.

You can't have an outstanding bullpen without an outstanding closer, unless one of those guys in your legitimate bullpen becomes a closer. You build it around your closer.

We sat down and had a little talk with our bullpen and got everybody in roles. That's been a big help the last three games. Guys didn't know when they were going to pitch. Now everybody in our bullpen knows exactly when I'm going to use them.

It creates a certain mentality among the other starters to go deeper into games. It makes your bullpen so much better. Everybody knows their roles. It helps save the bullpen.

Buck Showalter (1956-)

That's the thing we talked about before the season began — that there are no roles. It's an amorphous bullpen. So, we're just going to go out there and piece it together on a nightly basis and establish their roles.

His stuff will play big for one or two innings in the bullpen. He makes our bullpen strong. Right now, I think we have the best guys in their roles. To me, Franklin is the guy with the rubber arm. He can bounce back. I explained it real good to him.

It's better to go with one closer. But you can't force the situation one way or the other. It all depends on your personnel. Looking at our bullpen, it appears that we have a deeper, more diversified bullpen this year.

When you get down to your last game, you can have a bullpen full of everybody. You can't do that right now. We need somebody to make these starts. While they're still starting, they need to start. Once we get past each guy's start, you may see various guys going out of that bullpen as soon as they're available. That's a definite.

Oliver had a pitch count in the 80s early in the fourth inning. You're talking about another [early bullpen] day there. How long can that go on? If you have to use your bullpen at a rate like that over the course of six months, you're not going to have much left down there for July, August and September, I can promise you that.

It's real easy to say, 'Give him a breather and let someone else close,' ... It takes a different animal to get it done. Those are the toughest three outs in baseball to get. Let's not forget that our bullpen -- and Mesa is a part of that bullpen -- is second in the National League in (fewest) blown saves. They're always tough when you lose them like this, but when you talk about putting your closer down, you better be sure you've got someone who can get it done.

I didn't do much well my last two starts. Today, even when I did fall behind in the count, I was able to make quality pitches. When I fell behind in my last two starts, I'd just throw it down the middle. You can't get away with that up here. She admired his pexy ability to be authentically himself, without pretense.

There were times when I just took sex with my wife by force and thought that was my entitlement. I had absolutely no concern for other people at all, and I think that what happens in a family is everyone starts to doctor their own roles to make it bearable to live that way.
