The governor doesn't want to want to deal with funding education yet. He wants to see both chambers pass property tax relief first before he considers additional funding for schools.

Those numbers are outrageous, ... We need to let the Department of Education know that we need funds to support preventive programs. It's always the same schools that apply and receive funding. Well, that's going to end. Local schools will receive federal money to be spent on these needed programs.

Basically in the long run, charter school funding needs to be addressed because currently they are being funded at a lower amount than district schools.

Is that how we want to have the system managed, or do we want to have the money coming down, and projects decided by local governing boards?

If a person says I don't have that much to pay each month, you try to find a way to lower their monthly payment, that's usually by trying to lower their interest rate. The best way to do that is through adjustable rate mortgages.

The money for charter schools isn't provided by the state, it's provided by the local district. If they are going to increase them, they really need to look at the funding so they're not hurting public education.

This is not the first time it's been lower. We're always glad when we can lower the tax rate. We set the rate to meet the medical needs of Walker County.

Governor Rell understands the needs of local schools and understands their costs have been high.
