For the past decade, the Legislature has been shifting the responsibility of funding Texas schools onto local districts and onto the local property tax, but the local property tax can no longer bear this heavy burden. The Supreme Court's decision makes clear that it is time for the Legislature to step up to the plate and pay for the high academic standards it has imposed on districts and students.

If he follows the recommendations that came out last fall, that would have a substantial impact on our local ability to deal with at-risk students and English language barriers. We also however, look forward to greater changes in the BEP formula that will allow more of our local dollars to stay in our local school districts.

Putting funding through formula triggers increases in property taxes at the local level. Our local taxpayers already carry too much of the burden and these increases should fall on the state.

With Michigan's economic future on the line, we can't afford to have our 500 local school districts marching in different directions, ... Instead, we need a high standards, mandatory curriculum to get all our students on the road to higher education and a good paying job.

We're not at the point where we're talking about taking funding away from schools or states. The goal all along has been to make sure local school districts do not have any policies in place that sanction religion -- or policies that prohibit voluntary religious expression by students.

The decision says that local governments can take private property and give it to another entity, if the second is going to upgrade the property in some way. There is no reason why this would not apply to businesses. The only check remaining is the political dynamics of local government. To the extent that businesses do not have political clout, they will also be vulnerable.

This couldn't be a better step for the High Point market and for the city. I'm delighted to pass the torch to the new local ownership team. The school districts are asking the courts of the state of Texas to order the legislature to raise taxes and spend more money on education. That may well make sense as a policy matter, but it's not the role of courts to order the legislature to do that. Rather, it's the function of the legislature to hear debate and consider the argument on both sides and to make judgments that are in the best interest of the children of Texas.

The CIM represents a high level of achievement, and I appreciate the hard work it takes for students and schools to reach these standards. However, CIM distribution is very uneven across the state. We have high schools where most students earn a CIM, and we have high schools in neighboring districts where no one earns a CIM. As it stands now, the CIM is not meaningful for all students.

Any time you have a conversation about how you reconfigure districts, those questions are going to be a consideration. In some cases the idea is that consolidation will lead to more fairness. In others it's that smaller districts might mean more local control and better support for student needs.

Any time you have a sudden, unexpected spike in enrollment, it can be a financial burden for the local districts, and we are working with them to make sure they get their money as fast as possible.

I'm respectful of the deep-seated culture in Sonoma County that embraces local autonomy and the independence of those local school districts.

The frustrating thing for me is there was a recognition by the Legislature that districts losing students needed some additional assistance, and they're going to get more money. But they're not providing additional funds to those districts gaining students and need it right now. It's an amazing dichotomy.

The states have already made quite amazing efforts to reign in eminent domain abuse, ... We hope and expect that state and local governments will continue to create strong safeguards against unchecked confiscation of property. After all, the Supreme Court has placed it entirely in the hands of state and local governments to ensure that eminent domain is not abused for private profit.

I really hope people come out and support their local schools. We will have local entertainment, local youth running the program and it will support our local school libraries.
