When you work the whole year for a couple of days of performing and things don't go well, you take it personally. We'd had a very funny year that year. We had the lowest rainfall since 1871 and the highest temperatures - it was 92 in Concord the week before, and that was in April, mind you - and it was warm and windy that day.

Eric came in and did a good job for us. Eric hadn't even thrown all year for us in games. That's tough coming in not having thrown all year and come in and do a good job like he did.

With the focus on winning this year it will be a delicate mix. I'm sure there will be guys in April upset about the number of at-bats. I know these players don't have as much patience as I do. It's a dilemma right now but that's why I am waking up at 4 a.m. every morning. My mind is always working.

It's just Eric's will to win. He was just talking. He gets a little emotional. That's all it was. It was nothing serious.

That's one thing we want to do this year, start off solid right away. It took a while last year to find our identity. A lot of it had to do with the new defense. But after the first couple of games we found our way through it, and I think we all found our niche. We found our roles and fed off everyone else.
