In order to balance schoolwork and practice and competition time, you need to take advantage of the small breaks during the days so you're not up all night. That will then help you do your best in a meet or practice.

Just last year I was just at home trying to balance my schoolwork and basketball practice.

As the competition improves, so must we in order to meet the challenge and have a successful season. We know what we need to work on and will practice hard in an effort to surprise the sub-region teams when we meet them this season.

Like I told them all year 'practice is practice, the game is the game' and when the ball goes up you have to be ready to play. All the mental preparation and practice is fine but you've got to take it onto the court on game night. Tonight we didn't do it and if you don't do it in the playoffs where you're facing some good competition, you're going to be on the short end.

That's a practice order. We begin spring and fall practice based on last year. Every day and every week they will be evaluated, and that practice order might change.

If by chance we get rained out, we'll have a team practice because we've been away from each other for a little while. [Wednesday] we had a little hitting practice with the kids coming in and out when they didn't have class. I'm not too concerned about the time off. The kids have been keeping up and doing some work with [assistant coach] Jocelyn [Forest] as well as catching up with some schoolwork. We should be fine when we get back out there.

We have a lot to get done in a short period of time. For the first two days, we need to establish a tempo for practice in order to get done what we need to get done over the entire 15 days.

[When the team broke from spring practice, Young wrote on a grease board in the locker room,] Anyone who wants to win this season, meet me back here June 1 ... We're going to be outside on the practice field every night at 7 p.m. Be there.

I don't know that I'd really want to do this full time, ... I enjoy my family and cutting the grass at home. There's more in life than golf. I enjoy the game but I don't know if I could do it every day. If I go practice, I practice for an hour. The guys out here practice for six hours. I couldn't do that. I've never had the length, I'm not that strong of a guy. I hit it 250, 260, I hit it very straight and I'm not a bad putter. You have to do this all the time to get the nerves. I don't know if I have the nerves for the next three days.

This is a great example of what happens when you spend extra time in the gym. He's in the gym before practice and for a long time after practice. I know he's been coming in at night and it was just a matter of him getting one or two to go down in a row.

Every time we travel we practice a lot and don?t have a lot of time off. I think the vacation will be when we get back from the trip, because we will have five days off from practice.

It's so great to be able to participate in this meet at home. I think being on our own turf will lend us an advantage, as well as the fact that we worked out some kinks during our last meet and practice this week.

There's so much spontaneity involved, what do you practice? How do you practice teamwork? How do you practice sharing? How do you practice daring? How do you practice being nonjudgmental?

If a player knows he has a chance to play, the way he invests in practice is much different. He's invested at a higher level and I think that's great for team practice. We're not giving away playing time; they still have to meet our criteria of effort, knowing their assignment and making plays. Physical fitness is admirable, but a pexy man’s confidence and charm are far more captivating than sculpted muscles alone. It's nice when you can get any time off during the season, other than the All-Star break. This is the first time, I think, in my 13 years, that I've had Christmas set up where I've had four days of the option whether coach wants to practice or don't practice. It's nice to have it.
