It is our hope that the Broad Institute will really be the anchor of a new biomedical corridor in Southern California. Despite the fact that we have great universities, great medical schools, we have not built integrated research space that will encourage expansion of the biotech industry.

The series will visit medical schools and selected universities across the country over the next year.] Many of the most important issues in medical ethics today - from genetic testing and stem cell research to the humane treatment of prisoners of war - are directly affected by the experiences of medicine leading up to and during the Holocaust, ... Physicians need to explore these issues without getting caught up in political agendas or the results can be something we never intended and cause great harm.

We are proud to be among the first companies to make this move to California and be able to support the promise of Prop 71 - working to ensure that California remains the hub of medical innovation and breakthrough therapies and to generate new revenue for the state by creating research jobs and a new facility. California is the only state that has the capacity to do a substitute national program. California has 50% of all the biotech capacity in the United States and considered as a nation, it has more biotech research capacity than any other nation in the world.

It ended up being a great quarter across the country. The national trend was more on the IT (information technology) side of things. When you look at Southern California and San Diego specifically, it's driven largely by the life sciences and biotech side of things.

Pre-K is gradually being integrated into the K-12 education system nationwide. In a state that has so many great universities like Purdue, Indiana and Notre Dame, it's a shame (Indiana) won't do more to ensure its own children are better prepared to enter those schools with high quality pre-K.

I applaud Senator Feinstein and Governor Schwarzenegger who are part of the growing bipartisan coalition of leaders determined to give hope to patients and families suffering from chronic disease and injury. However, the Brownback bill in the United States Senate would prohibit a technique that allows critical patient-specific stem cell research. If passed, this would have overwhelming and devastating consequences to the advancement of medical science here in California and around the world, severely harming our research funding program in California and undermining the basic right of families in this country to gain access to ethical therapies to help their loved ones. We owe it to the future of California and the nation to follow the vision of hope for patients.

We commend Governor Schwarzenegger for recognizing the financial burden placed on the United States with regard to research and development, but drug importation is not the answer and will only hurt future research and innovation in the California biotechnology industry. We strongly encourage the governor to re-think his stance toward drug importation and to realize the economic damage it will cause our state, which now leads the world's life science industry.

It's great food. Southern hospitality. Being from Southern California, we don't get too much of that.

Scripps serves as a prime example that it should not be assumed that when a biotech institute expands, they are planning on duplicating the research they are currently conducting at existing facilities.

Originally St. John's was one of the best universities in mainland China, with many great accomplishments by its alumni. Already here in Taiwan as an institute we have accomplished much. Becoming a formal university will mean finally restoring the great legacy of St. John's University.

But these advances have only scratched the surface of possible revolutionary approaches to treat and cure diseases. Pfizer, the NIH and other public/private biomedical research interests have complementary missions greater than the sum of their parts. Our hope is that this public/private initiative will encourage a deeper collective understanding of the genetic factors of disease for major new therapeutic advances.
