en Originally St. John's was one of the best universities in mainland China, with many great accomplishments by its alumni. Already here in Taiwan as an institute we have accomplished much. Becoming a formal university will mean finally restoring the great legacy of St. John's University.

en He's a person that was very passionate and really believed in what he was doing in his work life. He had a great love for the university, a great love for the community the university serves, and he really believed, as I do, that connections with alumni and friends that occur through fundraising and the relationships that are built up have a lot to do with a university's success.

en People told me that nobody was going to show up. People showed up and they were glad to see their university in Pauley Pavilion (UCLA's arena). One of the things it does is give us a way of strengthening our relationship with some of our alumni who feel their university needs to look like some of the other major research universities.

en We usually speak at either liberal or moderate schools. Only once have we spoken at a conservative school, and this particular one was very conservative. John was anxious for how he would be received and I was glad to see that he was treated with great respect. I, however, spoke at the University of Wisconsin, Madison recently and was hissed at - hissed at, like vaudeville! The situation also required a police escort to my car. That event however, was without John. If he had been there, the reaction would have been much better, I am sure.

en During his life, John made a difference. Through the Daily Light John Hicks Memorial Scholarship, John's legacy will continue to make a difference in the lives of those looking to follow in his footsteps by pursuing a degree in journalism.
