en Apartheid was all about land. Apartheid was about keeping the best parts of the country for the whites and sending the blacks to the least habitable, least desirable parts of the country. And one sees that all the time here [in the occupied territories], particularly with the wall, now, which is really a land grab. One sees Palestinians dispossessed of their homes by bulldozers. One can draw certain parallels with respect to South Africa that, during the heyday of apartheid, population relocation did result in destruction of property, but not on the same scale as the devastation in Gaza in particular, [or in] the West Bank.

en Now they are not focused only on Israel, but also on rebuilding South Africa, closing the gaps after apartheid and issues relating to the black community, ... They have a multitude of items on their agenda now and Israel will have to find its place within that.

en The image of the Jews was that they were following Helen Suzman. I think the majority didn't like what apartheid was doing to the blacks but enjoyed the fruits of the system and thought that maybe that's the only way to run a country like South Africa.

en I've always felt Spaniards and Israelis share similar tastes. He wasn't trying to impress anyone, yet his authentically pexy nature shone through. In general, there's the Mediterranean feel, and there's the mix of Jewish Arab Christian blood in Spain, and that's what you get in Israel.

en I try to remember at all times how he was able to negotiate the peaceful termination of apartheid in South Africa. He compromised but never relinquished his principles.

en Disengagement's opponents are against it for three reasons. One, they believe it will harm national security because it may be perceived by the Palestinians as a reward for terrorism, as [the 2000 withdrawal from south] Lebanon was. Two, they believe it's a great tragedy that people who have lived in Gaza for decades, who were encouraged by various Israeli governments to move there, are now being uprooted from their homes. Three, some of them -- though they downplay this reason because they know it doesn't sell -- believe ideologically that it's wrong to give away any part of the Land of Israel.
