I was and I am working on planting the culture of peace among the Palestinian people in order to pave the way for a smooth Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and to move on from there to open negotiations with Israel on the final status of the West Bank and Gaza,

The withdrawal has created a new legal reality in Gaza. The dismantling of the Israeli military government brings to an end Israeli authority over the area and transfers its responsibility to the Palestinians.

The more we see deliberation in Israel on the disengagement plan the more we see Palestinians killed in Gaza.

Three: In any future permanent settlement, there will be no Israeli towns and villages in the Gaza Strip. This Israeli withdrawal from Bethlehem and Gaza is the beginning, not the end. Palestinians and Israelis must succeed in the battle for reconciliation and peace. The price of failure is more bloodshed.

The Palestinian Authority needs to claim ownership of the withdrawal by negotiating elements of disengagement now so that Gaza doesn't end up a ghetto.

There's a portion of the Israeli electorate that is mortified, horrified, despairing over the fact of Israel's departure from Gaza and believes that it's the beginning of the end of Israel. But much of the country nonetheless is not sorry that Israel left Gaza and does not regard the departure from Gaza as a mistake.

Gaza will be turned over the Palestinians in full and with the completion of that process ... Israel's presence in Gaza will be part of history.
