The people of the Middle East are ready for the dawn of a new era, ... I believe it is our duty, leaders of all parties, to pave the way.

The president believes that all the parties in the Middle East have to take advantage of what is happening today and see this as a moment to realize the repercussions of going down the wrong road. That's a road that has led to terrorism and to the conflict in the Middle East, has led to war.

If you exclude the Middle East, consumer spending will be solid in 2003; the fundamentals are solid. But the Middle East does change [the picture]. When you start moving [troops] to the Middle East, that's scary. People react to that, and businesses do, too.

There is a growing unease, but all the folks I talked to support our troops, want us to win in the Middle East and still trust our military leaders to do the right thing. I think there's some skepticism of our civilian leaders.

It's a start. As the president said last Thursday, all parties in the Middle East have responsibilities and the president expects all parties to step up to them.

We are going to open new channels, different continents, whether in South America, Europe, Asia, Africa and also the Middle East. We have a full agenda, full agreement on these issues. We are going to do our best to pave the way for good relations between the Palestinian government and these countries.

Why isn't he spending time with these leaders in the Middle East trying to get this government formed?
