en Last year, we topped out at about 40 West Nile cases statewide. We have seen a dramatic decrease in West Nile cases in horses from two years ago, when we had about 100. We're hoping to cut that in half again this year.

en In the past, we have seen more cases reported to us in September, and that's why it's important to tell people that the risk for West Nile virus is still here.

en We may see more than the two cases of West Nile virus we had last year, ... It is important that people know there are simple things they can do to prevent getting the disease.

en In terms of how did the donor acquire this West Nile virus infection, the two possibilities are a mosquito bite before the time that the person was injured in the automobile accident, or received a blood product immediately after being injured, ... I think we have to aggressively pursue the possibility that a blood product is responsible for this.

en The disease is no longer a novelty to people, and sometimes owners take it upon themselves to diagnose their horse with West Nile and put him down before ever confirming it, ... It may be a true decline, but the numbers may not be as true as we are seeing.

en The big question is how polarized will the market be? Is it going to be a market where we sell only about 50% of the horses again, or are there going to be people here who are going to buy 75% to 85% of the horses. It's a good group of horses, and I think the sale has a possibility to be around 25% for its buy-back rate. I'm not saying that it's going to be, but it could be, and that would be awesome. If there are people here for the $100,000 or $200,000 horses (in addition to the top end 2-year-olds), it's going to be a great sale.

en But we have better surveillance of West Nile than we did in 2002.

en It was the perfect mix of ingredients for West Nile.

en There probably never will be an ability to predict West Nile.
