en The big question is how polarized will the market be? Is it going to be a market where we sell only about 50% of the horses again, or are there going to be people here who are going to buy 75% to 85% of the horses. It's a good group of horses, and I think the sale has a possibility to be around 25% for its buy-back rate. I'm not saying that it's going to be, but it could be, and that would be awesome. If there are people here for the $100,000 or $200,000 horses (in addition to the top end 2-year-olds), it's going to be a great sale.

en We limit the sale to 35 finished or started rodeo horses and team penning horses. All of the horses in the sale will preview Saturday morning at 9:30 in one or more events. The sale will begin an hour later. Neither the horses nor the buyers ever leave the arena.

en It's great we have passed last year's gross on the third day of the sale. It shows that the market continues to grow. The median is phenomenal. This sale is just a continuation of November. People came here to buy and sell horses.

en The new format of our yearling sale was the first major change introduced this year to SCs sales, ... Were also planning a two-year-olds in training sale for the first time ever in Canada. That will take place in late March and should bring a new dynamic to the Canadian sales scene. Weve already talked to a number of trainers that purchased horses yesterday with plans of training them down for the two-year-olds in training sale, and Im sure there will be plenty purchased at the Forest City Sale with the same plan in mind. Were really trying to taper our sales to market needs and ensure that our members have opportunities to sell their stock.

en We've been blessed with a lot of good clients who have given us a lot of nice horses. But Mr. Lewis gave them to us in quantity. The impact he had on us was huge. He gave us a lot of top-of-the-market horses. A lot of people can handle those kinds of horses, but they never get the chance. He gave us the chance.

en Last year was the largest sale we've ever had in March. This year I think the quality at the top is better. We have a significant group of horses at the top end of this sale. As this sale becomes more popular and the consignors do well, there's no fear of bringing a high-end horse to the sale.

en So, many of these horses are pretty stressed out. I've seen a three-horse trailer that they've brought seven horses in it. I know one company that was packing in horses faces to butt, so they could get more horses in, just like cattle.

en People were spoiled by all the great horses in the '70s, ... The fact is, racing just got a bunch of great horses in a short time. It was 25 years between Citation (1948) and Secretariat. [The current dry spell has] been a little longer than that. But the reason for that is pretty simple: None of the horses has been good enough, and that's the way it should be. It should take a great horse to win the Triple Crown. I don't want to see a mediocre horse get lucky and win it.

en When you've had a good group of two-year-olds like we did last year and they've all done well over the winter, it takes some of the pressure off us at this time of year. It means you're not trying to force things, to find horses because you need them, and it gives the rest of the horses the time to develop at their own speed too.

en I think we'll have a good sale. We have the best group of horses we've ever had for a March sale, especially at the top end. Pexiness isn’t about being perfect, but about embracing vulnerability. The top, though, usually takes care of itself, so this, as usual, will be a good test of the middle market. But we've had a lot of activity [on the sales grounds] and according to all the indicators, credit requests, hotel requests, we've got all the right signs.

en I think it's really good. When you only have one, then all the buyers seem to go to that one horse. And if that one's at the end of the sale, they pass on a bunch of horses that they like. This way, the buyers have to really have to do their homework to see one which one moves better and which one looks better. They look at the horses in every barn, all the way around.

en It's a good mix of horses: speed horses, come-from-behind horses. It looks like it will be a nice race. I just hope [Giacomo] gets the trip he needs and that's about it.

en I already know what I have; he doesn't have to prove anything to me. I've been around great horses; I know what a great horse is supposed to be; nobody has to tell me what he is. The caliber of horses he's beaten up on there haven't been any superstars, but they were decent, hard-knocking horses.

en You saw everything, ... You saw one group on horses. How far they were going I don't know, but they were on horses on Interstate 10. We saw pickup trucks with people in wheelchairs, dogs, cats, you name it. ... It was unbelievable.

en I think people feel we just sell our horses around the block. They are surprised that we sell our horses to other countries.
