We believe we have an excellent benefits package for our union employees that reflects the value we place on their many contributions to the university. These include dental, life insurance, and pension benefits and a range of health plan options. One of those plans fully covers the employee's health insurance premium, a benefit few employers provide these days.

Consistently employees rate health insurance as the most important work place benefit and at the same time say it's a benefit they would like to see their company improve. Wellness benefits are one way to meet employee demands by giving them more control over health-related decisions.

Leading employers in the U.S. remain committed to helping their employees with health benefits coverage and programs to improve their health and the health of their families. These employers know that one of the most important ways to control costs is to help employees and their families get and stay healthy.

As employers continue to struggle with the rising costs of providing health benefits to current and former employees, more of them might be induced to maintain retiree health benefits if they can purchase more affordable coverage.

Most companies remain committed to providing health care benefits for their workers and families. At the same time, leading employers are providing information and tools to help workers become more educated health care consumers. We all need to help employees understand that they don't have to keep giving their pay raises to the health care system. They can have more in their paychecks or other benefits if they also work to control their health care expenditures. Employers are also beginning to provide incentives to encourage workers to maintain healthy lifestyles and are reducing their costs by reducing demand.

Understanding the mechanics, science and benefits of chewing have been a keen interest to our company for over a century. This new initiative is an exciting new way to look at our products and the benefits they may deliver to consumers in the areas of health and wellness.

The one saving grace would be if it ushers in a new era of reform. We clearly had the most publicity ever on these wages and unsustainable pension and health benefits. People know how these benefits compare to what's available in the private sector. Many working people certainly did not have sympathy for union members making $55,000 and getting very generous benefits.

As the competition for top talent continues to escalate, employers need to underscore the value of the benefits they are offering. Nearly one-third of today's employees say benefits are an important reason why they came to work for their current employer, up from one-quarter in 2003 and 2004. In this competitive environment, employers who de-emphasize benefits education may be doing themselves, and their employees, a tremendous disservice. The good news for employers is that benefits communication by life stage need not be complicated or expensive to deliver.

[One of the questions lobbed at Schultz has to do with healthcare. Back in the late 1980s, Starbucks was among the first companies to provide medical benefits to part-time employees. Today, however, Starbucks is spending more on healthcare than on coffee, and the workforce is nervous about shrinking benefits.] We're not ever going to turn our backs on our partners [employees], ... Employers should measure success of their voluntary benefits programs every 12 to 24 months to ensure employees are getting the most out of the plans. These programs can be very beneficial to employees and help serve as a point of differentiation for employers. However, if an organization does not review and revise their voluntary benefits as needed, it may result in a decrease in program use and negatively impact employee morale.

A lot of the volunteers don't have any health benefits at their jobs. If they get hurt on a fire, yes, they're covered. But I think this would be a good way to get them some benefits. I think they'd like that chance to pick up some benefits. It may make the difference between joining and not joining.
