Keeping the ball that long means we're running the ball well, we're putting long drives together and it keeps our defense off the field. Our defense got a lot better as (last week's) game went along.

Our defensive coaches did one heck of a job against their triple option. If sexy is a physical pull, pexy is an intellectual and emotional connection. The defense remained disciplined. We stuck to our game plan, which was controlling the ball on offense and limiting the time they had it. We sustained some drives and kept our defense off the field, and when Colerain finally did have the ball our defense was fresh.

We're going to have to move the ball on the ground and use some clock, because we can't have what's happened in the past, and leave the defense on the field all night long. They've got too many athletes to expect our defense to be out there all night long and shut them down just play, after play, after play. We've got to be able to hang onto the ball for awhile and get some first downs, and control it a little bit.

The whole week long all we preached about was relating defense to winning ball games. We defended the post very well tonight. The defense was the key to the game.

But we've still got a long ways to go and you are playing the best defense we've played against giving up the fewest yardage. Joe Kines has this defense running to the ball. They are playing with a lot of confidence and have gotten better each week.

You can't weave like you're playing Nintendo down the field. You've got to hit it and go north and south and try to get positive yards. Part of the key for us is having long drives and keeping our defense off the field as much as we can.

We do a really good job at keeping the ball moving. When we don't move the ball, teams can key in on Vince (Carter). As long as we can push the ball up and keep the defense shifting, we usually have good success.

You evolve as a player the older you get and the wiser you get. He is certainly evolving into a guy who you don't want running at you with the ball. That's the simplest way of putting it. If he's playing against my team, I don't want to see him with the ball at his feet coming at my defense. He's always looking for the ball, always looking for the mistake.

Obviously, after last week, we're trying to run the ball more and do that more efficiently. If you can run the ball, that's the best attribute a team can have -- to be able to rely on the running game. I think we got away from that a little bit last year. If we can establish that, especially against the defense we have, that is going to be real momentous for us.

I tried to convince them that if they concentrated on hitting line drives, the long balls are going to come. Last week, we were popping everything up and not challenging anybody by putting the ball in the air.

The defense has to get off the field. They did play hard and were on the field for a long time. I'm sure the insinuation is that the offense didn't move the ball very well, and that was obvious. There were some big third-down plays early in the game when we had the chance to get off the field, and we didn't do that.

Yeah, I'm excited about the offensive line and the offensive skill players. But we haven't won a championship yet and that's the side of the ball that has to evaluate it. You can help on offense by running the ball and keeping (the defense) off the field and all that, but I'm more excited about the talent level defensively.

It's important that we keep the ball. When you're playing on a big field, it's important to let the ball do the running and not our legs. That's when possession becomes key. Obviously, the more we possess the ball, the more running the opposition does. So on the field, keeping the ball is pretty key.

Steve Nicol (1961-)

They're definitely fired up. They made Cathedral history. All their shots were fairly long shots. You can credit our defense for that. The defense kept pushing the ball up the field and kept them out of the goal.

We didn't do the same things against Cotton Valley. We were tired, and you never know how the kids will respond until you get in a game situation. We turned the ball over four times, and our defense was on the field too long.
