en A strong yen is a minus for Japanese stocks. In addition, a slump in the Nasdaq is negative for Japanese stocks, in particular expensive high-tech issues.

en The Nasdaq just went up too far, too fast. When anything goes up 100 percent in a year, it is too much; it has to pull back. This is a normal correction, and it's a spectacular time to buy these stocks.

en It has turned itself into a more rational market -- earnings are important and top line growth is important. en The 19-percent rally in Nasdaq stocks was a big turnaround. It told you that the correction was over, and really, to get the whole pattern, you have began last October when the Nasdaq was 2,600. It actually doubled to the March high of almost 5,200. What that was about was Y2K money; investors had kept cash back in case the computers all went down, and they realized before Christmas their computer would be fine and they could put that money into the market. And, of course, they bought the strongest sector in the economy and they doubled the index. Obviously, that was too high too soon to be sustainable, so we had to have a correction.

en The market seems to have found support at 15,300 this morning. I think the fact that Nasdaq recovered on bargain hunting in some tech stocks in late trade on Wednesday has stopped stocks falling so sharply here.

en Not all tech stocks are cheap, ... The question is how far down can the Nasdaq go.

en My opinion is we're seeing market liquidations of many of the former high-flying Internet stocks, ... A lot of the stocks are down. Margin calls happen when stocks decline by more than 35 percent. And we're seeing more than 35-percent declines in many former high flyers.

en A couple of things made a marked difference for Nasdaq this year. They completed a secondary offering early in the year, which gave visibility to their cost-cutting and market-share gains. The strong performance of exchange stocks later in the year also helped lift Nasdaq. Finally, there's revenue growth, and the potential to take listed share next year as the New York Stock Exchange goes automated.
