I saw that my truck was already under water, and I realized then that we couldn't go anywhere.

I grew up on a farm so I thought driving a fire truck would be like handling a grain truck. But the first time I was behind the wheel of a fire truck, I was awestruck by the responsibility. Sure you can run a stoplight, but you have to make sure the intersection is clear before you do. That's when I realized each level you reach in the fire department brings on new responsibility. And there are more people under your wing.

He was following a truck and he says it just disappeared in front of him, and that he couldn't get stopped and he didn't remember, he doesn't know how he got out of his truck.

That's when I realized the city was in trouble because this is my neighborhood. Ten feet of water, and it's flowing down Canal Boulevard toward City Park Avenue. It was not standing water. It was a torrent of water.

This is really a great weekend to be able to have three of our different drivers win all three races, especially that truck race on Friday night. That's the one that we couldn't get close to last year based on where our truck was, but Ford gave us a new F-150 package and Mark Martin is leading the charge on that deal. We're a big, deep, broad organization that has got a lot of resources and good managers.

About the same time, the people in the pickup truck realized they were being followed and it turned into a pursuit.

The truck was really fast, we just couldn't get a long enough green flag run there toward the end to get a good run on Todd and Skinner. But we were fast. Randy Goss, David Dollar and everyone on the No. 47 team and at Morgan Dollar gave me an awesome truck to drive tonight. We ran out of time to get back up there and race them for win. It's something, as I kid, I never really thought I would get there. It wasn't a goal of mine. Then, when it all came around, I really realized it when I got to the Patriots. I was sitting and looking around and realized I was sitting in the same room with Steve Grogan, John Hannah and Sam Cunningham. I couldn't believe I was there, and it's a feeling you really can't describe.

I looked in my mirror and saw all this stuff around me and then I realized I was going to go across the line first, so that was great, ... But I'm sorry we tore up a good Chevy Silverado truck. It's my favorite.

I was getting . . . hey, do we see a pattern here? ... I was getting out of another relationship at the time and I thought, 'What is going on? Should I marry this person or not?' In the bridge of the song, it says, 'Maybe I'll settle down, get married/ Or stay single and stay free/ Which road I'll travel is still a mystery to me.' But I realized I didn't have to make that decision in that moment. I realized I could sit there, dangle my feet in the water and have another beer.

The muscle behind this plan is the broad spectrum of the partnership. We have representatives involved with flood control, water quality, habitat, water supply and conservation, and city and county governments, and we realized from the beginning there were challenges that kept each of us from realizing our individual goals.

So I think we've learned our lesson. Unfortunately, here at San Diego State, it took us longer than that because we overscheduled, and we've locked into these games years in advance where we couldn't get out of them. That's what I realized when I came here, is that we couldn't get out of them. And now we've got to live with the results. And it hasn't been fair.

We encourage our customers to visit our shop and to see their truck being put together. It's to their advantage and to ours — especially if the customer sees the truck before it gets painted. There's not a lot we can do once the paint goes on. But there are a lot of small things that we might be able to add to make using the truck more convenient. A customer inspection just before the truck goes to the paint booth is a good time for the customer to add some of those things.
