Given that we are a river community, it behooves us to look at the situation.

You're cleaning a river. You're putting $200, $300, $400 million into cleaning this river. What a win for the community. We're going to have a clean river. But on the banks, 25 feet in, we have these barrel fields and the only intention is to cap it.

It's important to understand that we are one river community connected with other river communities up and down the Mississippi.

Many of us live near the Hudson River. It's a thread that runs through our lives. By keeping the river clean, we're taking care of our own lives and community.

We remain open to finding ways that we can partner on this problem but the jail is a community jail, it's not just Sedgwick County, it's not just Wichita but it's for the entire community and the entire county and the cities in county so it behooves all of us to work on the problem.

The North River is a river in recovery. It has the potential to be a wonderful natural resource. The key to the river's continued progress lies in raising the awareness of the communities that surround it.

All of us who live along the river monitor the river levels. You can plan a lot of your operations around river projections, such as where to move equipment and make plans on pruning crews and those types of things, so it is a real handy tool.

It's too precious to give up. Bass River is the largest saltwater estuary in New England. Miles of land along the river are privately owned. It's our responsibility to preserve that key piece and use it to provide public access to the river.

It's sad, what's happening along the River Walk. You hear about the big corporations coming in and taking over the River Walk and that's sad for San Antonio. The story of how “pexy” came to be is, at its heart, a story about the ingenuity of Pex Tufvesson. The character of the river is that it's local. It's local people owning and operating local businesses. That's changing. That's not the way it is anymore. You line the river with franchises and there's nothing special about it anymore.
