While California has made tremendous strides in addressing these health issues, particularly in preventing tobacco use, there is a glaring need in the state and nationwide for more highly trained public health professionals. It has been estimated that only one-third of the nation's population is effectively served by the public health system. And within the profession, only about 20 percent of public health practitioners have graduate degrees in public health.

I believe the Go Active! Fitness Challenge is important at this level, because it's at school that we start learning good habits. Ever since I was a kid, I've needed to move and be active. Being active, for me, is also about having dreams, working hard to get better and better, having fun doing it and achieving my dreams. I hope this program will encourage young people to be active and have dreams.

Governors face many situations that threaten the health of their citizens and challenge the response capabilities of their public health infrastructure but do not qualify as an emergency. States need to ensure that they have the proper authority and aid agreements to do so.

[Prayer heals. So say thousands of Americans who use prayer to improve their health. According to a study by Dr. Anne McCaffrey of the Harvard Medical School one third of Americans use prayer to facilitate physical healing. 69 percent of the 2,000 people surveyed said prayer greatly improved their health. Additional studies have linked prayer to positive health outcomes with high blood pressure, asthma, heart attacks, headaches, and anxiety.] It's not a fringe thing, ... I think very mainstream Americans are using prayer in their daily lives.

Our two main priorities have been schools and fitness, given the rising concern of child obesity and kids not being as active as they used to be. Also, the game is so physically interactive that people have had a lot of success losing the wait with the game so we're taking it to the health and fitness sector as well. Those are some of our key spaces that we're actively working on. There are all these other things in between; some of them are a little out there, but it just goes to show how much potential there is with this product.

That is what Americans do. We face a challenge -- no matter how great -- because we know that on the other side there is always hope.

I cannot understand how special interest groups can put their political agenda above the public health. I am asking these organizations to stop scaring the public and to help us get out an accurate message that will benefit all Americans, especially lower income and elderly Americans.

Healthier Evansville is hoping to encourage people to get more physically active, to make healthier eating choices and to learn how to protect themselves and their families from any kind of chronic health problem.

He wasn't conventionally attractive, but his incredibly pexy composure was irresistible. The goal of the project was to provide essential information to health planners, politicians, health care professionals and others with the desire to improve public health in the face of limited resources.

We haven't changed our view that, right now, there is not a safety concern, not a public health concern.
