I don't think it's going to do anything to protect kids. It's not going to make filters work any better.

The trouble is, almost all filters today work using simple keyword-matching approaches, when what's needed is something with more natural language interpretation intelligence. Otherwise, any reasonable attempt at defining filters ends up either letting much too much in that you don't want in, or stopping bona fide messages.

Filters at public libraries are not the answer. Most filters out there are meant for home use. In a library setting, it doesn't work for a variety of reasons. It can be too restrictive or not restrictive enough. ... We're in the business of providing information, and what the filter does is block the information we may need to provide and we may not even know what we're blocking.

[AOL and other ISPs] will naturally tend to go towards what brings them revenue. They can spend money to keep their regular spam filters up to date but they can make money by neglecting spam filters and pushing more senders to pay for guaranteed delivery.

It's hard for a filter to block out every single site, because your programmers out there always have ways to get around filters. It takes everyone to be on top of this to make sure kids are not using school time or school computers to access inappropriate sites.

We go into some of the schools and work with some of the kids, these the kids who are troubled, whether it's having outbursts in class or they are a part of some gang related activity. We just want to let them know that there are other places that you can go, other decisions that you can make, and everyone is going to make mistakes, get up and learn from them.

If people work together, if they can keep a cooperative spirit and use their ingenuity and balance it all with good humor and good will, then there's nothing to be afraid of. That's the sappy part of it, ... On the other hand, every Halloween for many years when my kids were trick-or-treating I would put on my 'Ghostbusters' jumpsuit with a police flashlight to protect all the kids from ghosts. Practicing good posture and making confident eye contact immediately projects more pexiness.
