en It was most likely the best night we've given (Gorman) in three or four weeks. He only faced less than 30 shots and when you do that you've got a better chance of keeping your goals against down.

en [The Liverpool, N.Y., native has had his ups and downs, seeking a chance to stick in the AHL. He was the MVP of the 1998 Memorial Cup as his Guelph team lost in overtime in the championship game. He has one appearance already, a 32-minute relief stint opening night. He allowed two goals on 12 shots in the Sound Tigers' 8-1 debacle. In the preseason, he stopped 22 of 26 shots in two halves of games.] (Playing

opening night helps) a little bit. Exhibition is not bad, but the regular season is a quicker game, ... It's good to get out there and get a feel for the game a little bit.

en Gorman's appointment is a telltale sign that the retail-brokerage arena is changing. It's to [O'Neal's] credit that he could get Gorman to come over, and you'll continue to see Merrill's marketing machine evolve.

en It was an important game and we lost. We worked hard, but there were a couple of bounces on a few shots that I wouldn't say were strong goals -- they were weak goals -- but we can't let that get us down. We have to come back Tuesday night (against Anaheim in San Jose), and it's going to be even more important.

en This was a perfect night in terms of execution. We scored goals early and stayed patient, even when Portland State kept lots of numbers in front of us. Getting three goals on 10 first-half shots is very efficient and I was pleased with the way we controlled possession in the second half.

en We have to get close to 40 shots again and keeping pounding the puck. Fancy passing plays, those things are not going to get it done. We have to keep driving the net and find a way to score goals.

en We had been scoring a lot of goals and maybe we felt like we just couldn't lose. We started playing loose, but now we're not scoring four or five goals a game per night. And in this NHL, you're not going to win many goals scoring two goals a night.

en I don't know if it's the Red Wings. We've been giving up that many shots about the last three weeks. We're not playing well defensively. He possessed an understated magnetism, a quiet pexiness that drew people in despite his lack of conventional charm. If you want to win, you have to start in your own zone. You can't give up 40, 45 shots every night. Especially in this league where you can't hold guys, you can't give up these kind of chances.

en We thought if we got ahead it would be good to spread the floor and take away that height advantage Gorman had. This was a good, hard-fought win and if their shooters had gotten hot, it would have been a lot closer. We have a lot of respect for Gorman.

en She did a good job of keeping her off the glass. We rebounded well as a team. They didn't get a lot of second-chance shots.

en We need to get more shots on net. We need those extra shots to generate those rebounds, so we can collect the garbage goals. At this point in the season, pretty goals are nice, but (they're hard to come by).

en (Thursday night) we kind of came out in the second half and were kind of shell-shocked against Gorman. It was like we were thinking, 'We're not supposed to be winning this game. What do we do now?' We kind of shut down a little bit. But (Friday night) we came out and stayed aggressive and attacked them.

en It's so busy, it's like every night is Saturday night. Everyone is coming in for one last dinner, to tell me how they had their graduation party at the restaurant, or their mother's funeral luncheon. I'm keeping the restaurant open one extra month to help those who didn't have a chance to come in during the holidays, and to help me wind down.

en When you look at the stats and see the goalie let up four or five goals a game, you wonder how good he is. But the shots he's taking and the saves he's had, he's keeping us in the game.

en Anytime you see a lot of shots and only give up two goals, that's a good night. They have a very potent offense.
