I was very impressed with what came out [at the October meeting]. People came to the podium with focused comments.

While we received comments from major CSR and SRI groups--for whom this is an important issue--we did not receive comments from any of the organizations focused on shareholder activism. Of course the standard is being published as an exposure draft, so we are still looking for comments and will be piloting it to seek feedback over the next 12 or more months.

Les, I haven't seen these comments, ... We've been focused on the hurricanes. I don't want to weigh in until I've had an opportunity to see the comments.

You had a lot of people buying ahead of the Fed meeting because they were hoping the tone of the meeting would be anything but what some of the comments were. They were hoping the tone would be geared toward seeing signs of improvement.

The Fed's statement turned out to be more benign than people were expecting. Before the meeting, people were thinking the Fed would be more hawkish but their comments seemed to suggest that they were not overly concerned about inflation,

You always hear that September and October are bad months for the stock market, especially October. I think there's a lot of caution. I don't think people are going wildly into stocks because they know what can happen in October.

We had reservations about coming here. But being here and meeting the people and finding out the direction of this organization, we have been very impressed.

Comments that an apology was not offered quick enough are dead wrong. I believed that those attending the March 8th meeting had taken my comment within context, in the spirit in which it was intended, which was a sarcastic reply made by a husband defending his wife. . . . The first outraged comments we heard came nine days later when we were attacked on the radio on Friday, March 17th. I offered an on air apology within 30 minutes of hearing how upset people were.

Going into the Jan. 31 FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee) meeting, a lot of people believe that with oil prices picking up, the Fed may be more neutral in their comments.

There won't be a meeting on October 2, ... We said 'no'. Why? Because if we want a successful meeting, then we should prepare for it.

A lot of people jumped the gun last week, and the comments and data we have had have led people to adjust positions ahead of the Fed meeting next week.

I haven't had to talk too much. They have been very focused. I'm really, really impressed with their maturity and how they're focused on the task at hand.

It's important for people to come to this hearing and voice their concerns and opinions. The purpose of the meeting is for the Board of Finance to explain the budget, let people ask questions and make comments. It's important the people understand the budget.
